    Seeking John & Agnes McKINNIN - Dance Teachers?

    I am seeking to find a John & Agnes McKINNIN (Nee THOMPSON); said to be Dance Teachers in the early 1900's.
    Their son: Walter McKINNIN; having connections to my family.

    Gosh that's a long shot Robert - 'our' dance didn't start till the 80's and the average age on here must be about 40 so you are talking about Grand or even Great Grand Parents - but good luck

    In the meantime "Welcome to the Forum" and if you aren't a dancer yourself at the moment - try it, it is pleasant way to enjoy life - giving you exercise and a great social life

    Leroy (Satchel) Paige (1906-1982)

    Mickey Mouse's girlfriend, Minnie, made her film debut, along with Mickey, in "Steamboat Willie" on November 18, 1928.
    That date is recognized as her official birthday.

    Hi Minnie:
    Many thanks.
    I wasn't aware of the age group.
    Would there be a more appropriate list or forum to enquire about my Dancing Teacher Relations?

    Not sure what style of dance John & Agnes taught - but seeking a forum relating to their dance style might be more fruitfull or join Face Book there is a group on there specifically for dancers - and this would include all dance styles plus it is also international.

    However, you might be lucky on this forum, lots of dancers come from a dancing background - my mother used to "taxi" (the equivalent to modern day Taxis) for Victor Sylvestor in the 30's

    NB: A 'taxi' dancer is an accomplished dancer who helps others

    (I am also one of the oldest members of the forum )

    Re: Seeking John & Agnes McKINNIN - Dance Teachers?

    Hi Robert and welcome to the Forum,

    As Minnie says, this is a fairly recent style of dance, but you never know your luck, someone may know someone...

    There are other dance forum websites, but (if you haven't already) you may also find it helpful to try websites about genealogy, tracing your family tree etc.

    Do you know where they lived? (I'm guessing McKinnin could be a Scottish name, do you know where in Scotland they came from? ) I'd also check MacKinnin, McKinnon, etc. etc.

    Even today, many dance teachers don't do it as their sole occupation, but I imagine times were somewhat tougher in the early 1900s so I guess they may have had another occupation as well? Worth bearing in mind if you're searching by occupation.

    Good luck in your search!

    Re: Seeking John & Agnes McKINNIN - Dance Teachers?

    Hi DavidY;
    I entered this forum as it mentioned Dance teachers, but was not aware of the purpose of the forum.
    Yes; I am on many and varied websites etc re Genealogy, but as this forum is about Dance Teachers etc; thought it an ideal forum to gain assistance re past Dance Teachers; since finding this isn't quite so.
    Unfortunately; I have no idea as to where my family lived Scotland, being told that Walter McKINNIN was taken from belfast, Ireland to Scotland when 2 and that could be anywhere from 1902 to 1916?
    Yes; I am aware of the various ways of spelling McKINNIN and of name changes.
    Yes; I very much need all the luck in the world if I am to find Walter McKINNIN and his parents.

    You could try the Scotland's People site. If he got married etc here, or was settled for any length of time then he would be on the censuses. I don't know about the Dance teacher connection, but I'll have a little root around and see what pops up.

    Good Luck

    Re: Seeking John & Agnes McKINNIN - Dance Teachers?

    Greetings whitetiger;
    I am on ScotlandsPeople, but am not a paid up member of.
    Although I am not sure; it would seem John McKINNIN was married initially in Belfast, Scotland; later marrying Agnes THOMPSON in Scotland, but; this is all unproven.
    I am always; very appreciative of any or all assistance, as I am not getting anywhere with this end.
    Robert
