    How to Start a Blog?

I'd like to get a blog going for our dance classes. Where do I start?

    Software? Hosting? Content?

In other words, it's best to assume I don't have a clue about blogs or anything to do with t'internet.

It takes all of 5 minutes to get it going..........and then you can blog mildly entertaining™ things likes this about dancing on the South Coast:

To start - you could just type 'blogger' into Google - and that should get you going. T'internet will help - of course you could just type "how do I start a blog" in t'Google thingy.

I would use WordPress for all the plug-ins/widgets that you can use and its SEO capabilities. If you want, you can also buy themes/templates for it, which make the setting up of it easier. Make sure you stay updated with the latest WP software, as most updates are plugging security issues. When you sort out a WordPress account, change your log-in from a general administrator to something else - any hacks are generally into the adminstrator log-in rather than a custom one (so I understand). Use Askimet to keep the pesky spam at bay.

I use both blogger and wordpress and have found I prefer blogger, much more straight forward when I was starting out lots of useful stuff built in - easy to rearrange layout and entry's. I find wordpress clunkier to use even after a couple of years of using it.

good luck!! and have fun blogging

Re: How to Start a Blog?

I set up a wordpress blog to document the journey to the wedding and the trials and tribulations we would encounter en route to the big day.

I found it very easy to set up (I had my own domain anyway) and easy to configure. being a web developer I wrote my own plug ins and styles and it was very easy to use.

Unfortunately the same could not be said of my web hosting service. and they regularly lost my Database and would wipe my file structure without warning. I got so peeved and annoyed I gave up on the whole wedding blog/ website.. and went for an off the shelf "weddingpath" page set instead.

But Hosting provider aside, if you can follow simple instructions, and have any experience of setting up php websites (or even if you haven't) I found wordpress very easy to use , configure and populate.

Re: How to Start a Blog?

Thank you for the advice, it was fab! I've done my blog for a while now. The hardest bit is keeping it fresh and finding/taking suitable pictures. I'd be delighted to receive suggestions. The blog is here.
