Quite, but as I said before, it only came about because EastmanJohn said that 'LeRoc' was the generic name and wanted people to be encouraged to use it

If we are looking for a new generic name,
I don't think we are I think we just want to establish, once and for all, what the 'widely accepted' generic name actually is!

I've now formed an opinion, that LeRoc is a name used by organisations, who want to be seen as offering a 'similar product' to Ceroc but an alternative 'brand'

I saw the word "modern" as being there to differentiate it from Ballroom Jive, rather than to suggest that it's actually new.

And who has had someone do a hand-jive when you've said you do "Modern Jive"? Most of us!
Actually, when I've mentioned it to family members of my mum's generation, they have always associated it with the "Jive" dancing that they did as teenagers in the 60's. Apparently they danced a kind of Jive that was a development from Rock 'n' Roll, but was closer to Modern Jive as we know it now. It wasn't taught to them, it was just what they did. So, Modern Jive seems like a perfectly accurate description to them.

Does the name come from a mixture of Disco and Foxtrot? Who owns the franchise?

Like he did here a couple of years ago?

There are a few things unusual about it. The basic pattern takes 3 beats (rockstep-side-side on &1-2-3), so you are always drifting across the beat. As a result it favours music where there is little difference between the downbeat & upbeat, such as disco. The movement is very quick, and could cause injury if you led it like most other dances. Instead it is danced almost entirely in compression.

If done well, it is one of my favourite dances to watch. Unfortunately it is very easy to do badly.

And when Discofox is "easily done badly" it gets to look even more like Modern Jive. Great name tho' (but too long)

    Well,

Ceroc itself seems to be very confused about what it's peddling:

Is it sensible to highlight/headline your main competitor in promotional material?

To be fair, it's probably the Town Hall publicists that are confused, not Ceroc.

Ceroc seem to be happy with the generic term "modern jive" as a quote from their champs rules clearly shows.

"The dance must be recognisable as a modern jive like Ceroc"

Jive and Salsa are recognised as dance forms far more than Ceroc is. Ceroc targets people looking for Salsa classes in their adwords campaign.

No, afraid not, the same description 'Salsa/Jive' has also been used in other listings.

Who, but a few, read those. Not me for sure.

In its more public face Ceroc clearly feels a need to sex-up its image. I have no problem with that, but feel this obsession with Salsa must ultimately be counter-productive. Who wants an imitator, a sham at that, when they can so easily get the real thing.

    If that's what they want.

But, make no mistake, I love my jive and just want to see its virtues and differentiators explained and extolled.

    I think that's another topic!!!!!

But getting back to the point, the use of the phrase "a modern jive like Ceroc" surely ends the debate. If the company Ceroc call their dance a "modern jive", then are they not accepting that the term "Modern Jive" is a generic term for the dance.

But hey, Engelbert does for me... wonder if it'll catch on

I hate all the names - they all sound bouncy and dated. I guess I'd settle for 'Smooth Jive' if I had to pick for me personally, but I guess 'Modern Jive' is the best generic term.

A while ago I was trying to think of a clever way to fuse the words Salsa and Jive, but unfortunately it just made 'SALIVA'!

I prefer the term Modern Jive as the generic term-

To me Smooth Jive is "just" an introduction dance to West Coast Swing .........

    Of course it's not.

Smooth Jive is slotted Jive that does not have the 'bounce' alot of other modern jive has. Even Ceroc teaches 'Smooth' nowdays.

West Coast swing is a compleatly different dance from Jive.

Youtube "smooth Jive" and "west coast swing" and notice the huge differences.

When I was teaching Jive we used the Tearm Smooth Jive so we didn't get confused with some of the painfull bouncy jive some of the other teachers were running.

I think it also describes the type of music plaed as well (blues, swing, pop, RnB etc) rather than stuff like "Stuck on You" and "Lion Sleeps tonight" etc.
