    Re: Metropolis - The Aftermath

apologies in advance - this post is incredibly boring

I wasn't suggesting you argue with them, I was suggesting that if you thought you would have a worthwhile experience you would stick around - were there no people who replied positively? was it a review like this thread?... as i think a suggestion of bias is not such a surprise where it is a review. Of course, now that this whole thing has grown legs and taken a life of its own , I completely regret the entire 'agenda' suggestion.

It is obviously different because a forum is meant to invite contributions, where as a group of strangers in a pub doesn't.
well... the analogy is closer than you suggest because each forum thread is akin to a specific conversation among only a small subset of the people there. You may get the annoying people only for that specific topic, but would you give up on the very first try? I am not defending my 'agenda' comment here, just suggesting that not everyone will necessarily view it negatively - which is provably true, i really wouldn't bother making such comments if i always got as criticised as in this case.

And if a group of strangers invited my opinion, and then claimed my opinion was arrogant or I had a hidden agenda, I would leave the conversation. If they wanted to argue about my opinion I would stay, even if we all disagreed.
And if ALL of them did that, so would I, but where theres only one annoying person...ah, thats me isn't it

I thought all your points were good in your reply, up until the 'agenda' bit, which undermines the whole debate. You change the topic from the event to the person.
But that is why I said it, i was questioning the tone of just one part of the post. Lets see if the person in question runs off screaming or simply answers the accusation. Having already read ENs response, its the latter. So I did not misjudge after all, not that I thought I had

Questioning or commenting on the content of a post does encourage further contribution. Questioning someone's motives or identity, in my opinion, does not.
Actually, in my experience, it usually does - when SWAY joined for example, and I remember being quite scathing toward DT when she first joined

Anyway everyone's opinion is biased; someone else might post a negative review because they are an arsehole, and someone else a positive review because they are an idiot. I'm still interested to hear what they say, and I'm happy to figure out my own opinion.
Any comments from me are not an attempt to force my opinion on anyone else, I am always looking for a reply from the person concerned - and it's a forum, they can. In fact I've always thought as any critical posts like that are a way to create discussion (in fact it is not even my opinion that EN really has an agenda, I obviously have no idea, I questioned the likelihood) - it did this time too, just perhaps more in the wrong direction.

So, if every time you post something, its feels like an uphill battle, ones likely to think, why bother?
Hey, I'm not always negative, neither is anyone else here.
This is true, but what happens in reality, is people usually find out about the "introduction threads" sometime 'after' they've been posting a while.
Well nearly all forums have a "please read for a while" disclaimer for new people. And most people do lurk for a while, otherwise how would they even know they will get any useful information from the forum? So to jump in with both feet, does stand out slightly.

Most likely, someone hears about the forum, then logs on and reads the 'latest posts' and post on a subject they have personal knowledge of.... like a recent weekender they've just been on!
yeah, thats probably entirely true too, especially for this forum. Oh sorry about that then

(How many years is it until your daughter's a teenager?.. I think it'll be mighty wise if you start to find alternative ways of asking questions, that doesn't put her back up immediately )
I don't really act like this in real life.

    Yes but your weird!
    Thank you very much.

And the rest of your reply was a better response than i ever expected. So much so, that I now fully understand where you are coming from with your review. I don't know what all the fuss was about.

Methinks you should be dancing. I'm just about to start a ball in Brighton and I noticed they'd left their guest internet connection on-line.

I'll be teaching/dancing in 20mins. What on earth is a MJ dancer doing on the forum on a Saturday night?

    Me? I'm doing both

    Re: Metropolis - The Aftermath

I have not been even looking at this forum let alone posting for some time now as interesting threads (to me) seem to get hijacked into petty squabbles that detract from the subject matter.
Just checked back here to see if there are any more reviews….nope….just more pages of squabbles.

Doubt if anyone will bother with posting further reviews on this weekender.
Maybe, just maybe, that was the agenda....................

The lighting problem in both halls was due to the in house emergency lighting system, which was way brighter than it needed to be, and unfortunately coudn't be switched off. This was easy to remedy in the blues room, but the same remedy couldn't be applied in the main room because of the height of the ceiling.I always thought that emergency lighting only kicked in when there was a power failure, but the system in the Palace was on 24/7.

Re the dodgy PA system...there was nothing at all wrong with the sound system - the systems in both rooms were top of the range, and several hours were spent installing them and setting the sound levels. -......the feedback problem was due to someone fiddling about with settings on one of the head mics, an annoying trait that some people have. Rather than get someone that knows about these things to come and resolve the problem, they fiddle with things they know nothing about. This problem was sorted next day and the levels were all sound checked prior to being used. can't comment on the skipping CDs or the sudden increase in volume during the cabarets, as I wasn't in the main hall at these times.
I know edinburghneville, he comes to my events. I don't think he has any kind of hidden agenda, just giving an honest review on how the weekend was for him. hopefully the teething problems that made his experience less enjoyable will be remedied by the next Metropolis.

I agree, out of 86 posts, there's only 10 reviews
I've looked at splitting the thread (somehow) but its a difficult call, as some of the replies are both relevant to the topic whilst also replying to the off-topic discussion

Doubt if anyone will bother with posting further reviews on this weekender.

Keep review threads pure, with only reviews on. Post a link to another thread with all the rest of the posts on.
Equally the other thread should have a link to the review thread.

If only it were that simple!

Take DD's last post for example, it wasn't a review but it was completely relevant to the thread and answered some of the points made in earlier reviews!

Stokebloke's post wasn't a review, it was merely a statement to the effect that he 'couldn't' post a review (which btw, isn't true)- So, in your rules, do you think he shouldn't have been allowed to post that, and if yes, where do you suggest we move it to?

DS's post, was an interaction with EN - Do we stop all interaction and discussion? Or do we 'choose' what's allowed to stay and what has to be moved? Afterall, this is a 'discussion' forum!

Believe me, I've pondered over these questions many many times. (why do you think I'm looking so old )

Which is total rubbish of course. I mean when was a poll ever conducted of all the dancers in the UK as to which dance organization ran the best weekend event?? Never is the answer. And if there ever was one by sheer volume and longevity the Caister Soul weekenders would win hands down.

If someone had a mind to contact the trades description governing body over it they would have to prove that claim or else withdraw the statement because manifestly, as an example, that was not the view of many people attending the Skeggie w/e they ran.

So if he was persuaded into attending this w/e on the back of that statement and was disappointed, IMO he has every right to pull them up on it in his review.
Yep cos every poll ever conducted is nationaly........ Not

Also, i would argue that EN had every opportunity to reply, and reply he did, making his position very clear and letting us all know him a bit better. Generally, no , i don't regret my thousands of off topic posts

I think you have a tough job Lory. The only suggestion I can make is to nip the spoilers in bud as soon as they start, but then I am sure some people only look at the forum for conflicts.

I have already been banned from one dance forum for saying it as it is...so I am no example to follow.

Anyway, as always, we'll try our best!

And remember, you always have the 'Report button' at your finger tips!
You can use it to, simply bring our attention to something, as well as making suggestions for moderation. The report will be seen by all mods and we can then 'debate' what action, if any, to take
