    MS Word Default List Formatting

Hello. I've been trying to make some changes to the formatting in Word 2007. With the auto-format, if you type 1. blah, it converts this to a list. What I want to do is change the formatting that is automatically assigned when this happens.

Unfortunately, I can't find where this happens. I've changed the paragraph that is applied, but this is ignored. I've changed the list styles, but this is ignored. Is there any way to change this?

(and, please, don't give me work-arounds - I know them all, but they aren't good enough, because other people ignore them. I need to actually change the default behaviour).

    7) To prevent this, go to Tools | AutoCorrect Options and select the AutoFormat As You Type tab. Find and deselect the box(s) labeled Automatic Bulleted list and/or Automatic Numbered list and click OK.

Not that I know the answer, but to clarify the question:
    • do you want to prevent it happening (as per Miguel's tip)? Or
    • do you want to keep the automatic numbering but in a different format? What sort of formatting would that include?

I don't know if it helps with your specific query, and it relates to Word 2000 not 2007, but I've found this document helpful in the past when trying to grapple with Word numbering, styles etc.

It's on this page if you want to see the context.

The latter. I want to change the default formatting for autoformatting. It appears to be impossible - but I if anyone knows better, that'd be most appreciated. The document you linked to describes the situation I'm trying to manage 'pretty close to random'. It's the randomness of users that I'm trying to manage; when the software's behaviour is also random, it's never going to work.
