    Re: valentines day question

    David,

Some thoughts... A nice bottle of champers approx £20 ish. If it's a gesture U're going for, a half bottle isn't usually much cheaper but can save a few vital £££s.

On the subject of pampery type gifts, they do tend to be popular and also tend to work: just be careful what you order!!! It might help St Valentine's day relations if you were to book an all over swedish massage as opposed to a facila hair removal session, etc, etc.

Combining the two... could you not give the Mrs a nice massage? Or a pamper... foot massage... nice bubble bath etc... When money is tight, the best thing you can give of yourself is time... your time (and attention).

Most hotels will do a package, but it's easy enough to arrange the seperates without going OTT...

That said, a lady forumite will now respond and totally rubbish all I've said!!

    Good luck with it....

    Re: valentines day question

    Hi Dave_Pr,

CJ seems to have covered most of it (I'll get the fee later )

As for pampering etc I suppose it depends on what your other half like - eg is she shy? in which case she might not want a full massage (most of which require removal of at least some clothing), or, does she have tickly feet - then don't book reflexology etc...

As a non drinker for me champagne or alcohol of any kind is not needed, and if my willpower hold out chocolate might even be forgone

Hayfever sufferers on the other hand might not want the flowers (I do )

Personally I would rather have the company of the man in my life, and instead of the usual extras, extra brownies points could be procured by Blues/ dance workshops (a la Twilight ) - What better way to spend Valentine's day than dancing in each other's arms??

(Wash your minds out with carbolic this minute!! )

Cheaper still, you can bring your own bubbles. Buying from an off-license is far cheaper than buying from the hotel (a £20 bottle from a hotel wouldn't be that good; from an offie would be OK). Of course, you'll need to chill it and it'll be a little less cool than having it waiting for you in the hotel, but that's a trade-off for you.

The cheapest option is to ignore Valentines all together on the very moral grounds that you don't want to donate so much money to the gross commercialisation of love. That might work of you'd made a lot of romantic gestures throughout the year. And remember that morality can be a very lonely place...

    Re: valentines day question

ladies spa days etc are very costly, even a massage can take quite a bit of budget and if its cheap, it wont be worth it in the first place.

CJ's suggestion of doing the massage yourself is actually a lovely idea and something i would love.

This is what i did for Danny last year, it was for his birthday but you could adapt for valentines day.

I brought 7 cards so that i could give him it each day up to his birthday one week before. Inside the card was a handmade voucher. These vouchers entitled him to certain perks, (use your imagination for that one) but for a lady you could say put, you will do her ironing for one month at her request, you will hoover through the month of july , you will massage her feet for one hour at anytime requested (you get my drift)

have flowers delivered to the hotel if you really want flowers, its cheaper that way, they can then put into your room. Make your own CD for her with your fave songs on or songs that you remember are yours.

Just a few ideas --- good luck

thanks to cj whitetigger geoff and trouble

am not going crazy with this hallmark holiday just wanted to make the gesture.

wouldnt know the price of a bottle of champaigne from the price of a sprouts car to be honest as i dont drink it myself am more of a real ale man.

went into one shop and they wanted 60 quid for a bottle of the fizzy stuff didn't know if anything cheaper would be rubbish or not needles to say i let it pass

buy her flowers often but usually just from the local supermarket not quite as bad as from the garage but not much better. would a decent bucket of flowers be got for around the £30 mark? or is that too much looking on intraflorea on the web they all look about that range for internet flowers but ill have to go to a flourist on route to hotel

dancing might not be so hot have only been to two lessons and she doesnt dance other than normal dancing in clubs

so about £20-30 for the champers and about the same for the flowes then? think the hotel does a salon palor thing too wouldnt be booking anything too horrific like a chemical peal or something

    thansk for all your advise

    Re: valentines day question

Flowers wise - the best place to go is the stalls in town centres, where you can just ask them to make a bouquet up to a theme/colour/including or excluding specific flowers to a certain cost. They're usually more individual and a lovely good sized bouquet for £30, although if you want roses you'll be paying more at that time of year. (If you're stopping en route, supermarket (or M&S) flowers are usually pretty good nowadays, just buy something a little more colourful and remember to remove the label!

You should be able to get a great bottle of Champagne for £30, as most supermarkets have them on offer up to key occasions. Even their own label bottles are pretty good quality.

I am afraid you are probably going to have to pay over £30 for a decent bottle of bubby
    http://www.waitrosewine.com/23020181...x?source=14798

for under £30 try and find a friend with a Macro card, their house champagne is about £11

Majestic Wine have some very good offers, but you need to buy 2 bottles

As a beer drinker you will realise Champagne can only be drunk at breakfast
    so order it in bed

to save £££ serve bucks fizz made with real orange juice ( not the nasty reconstitute stuff ) and sprkling wine

a cool box with lots of freezer packs will keep things cool, beg buy or borrow a proper ice bucket and some nice glasses

    for chocolate

Does your lady have a thing about champage in particular? Prosecco (Italian sparkling wine, but in many instances better than champagne!) is very fashionable these days. I get a nice one from Sainsbury's for about £8, and I prefer it to champers.

To me, romance is about doing something that shows that you know what your partner likes. It doesn't have to be a grand gesture, or expensive. I love it when Beo makes me breakfast in bed, and recently he's taken to warming the bed up with the hairdryer! I was in a book shop a while back and saw a magnetic bookmark - a Mr Bump one! Those who know Beo will know how appropriate that is as he's always bouncing off the walls (or anything else that gets in his way) and he loved it. It's the thoughtful little things that count.

    Re: valentines day question

Why don't you make a home-made pamper-hamper and take it with you (hidden of course!!)

Buy a cheap wicker basket and line it with some black or red silky material or tissue paper etc..

Pop in a small box of chocolates (you can get heart shaped ones in most supermarkets,,
A few scented candles and maybe a floating one for the bath?
    A small bubblebath
A bottle of Champagne or if neither of you are really into champagne, then a cheaper alternative such as Asti Spumante, will still go pop! (Don't forget the glasses!)
A CD made especially for her (or ipod playlist and domn't forget your portable speakers, if you have some)
A small bottle of massage oil (boots, bodyshop, superdrug, Ann summers etc all do them)
Cover the top with something like a folded towel and put a big red ribbon around the lot, then place a single red rose or balloon to finish!

    What girl wouldn't love that?

AND it doesn't have to cost a fortune

    Basket
    http://www.barnitts.co.uk/products/details/3841.html£2-49

    Tissue
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Metallic-Shred...ht_5274wt_1197 £1-29

    Ribbon
    http://www.rvops.co.uk/model-making-...eqsog0e8dhgig6 £1-75

    Towel
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Egyptian-Cot...4634415&sr=1-5 £1-99

If you want it to look REALLY professional Cellophane wrap http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_...p&sprefix=celo

    Tee he he...http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kitsch-Shop-...634900&sr=1-13

Bubble bath - Massage oil - candles - and chocs, can all be got for under £3 each

I reckon you can do the lot for under £30 quid, easily!

    Re: valentines day question

Another added suggestion along with the Cd/Playlist if you have Photo's of the 2 of you make a collage and if you have a programe that allows you to edit the Photo's put little speech bubbles with what your thoughts were at the time of the Photo's (if they weren't honourable then don't put them ) because that will be kept forever because the Champers will be drunk the Chocolate eaten and the flowers composted.

    Just a thought
