    Daytime Dancing

I love daytime dancing (tea dances etc), but in my area they are very rare, although there is plenty of evening dancing. I assume this is the same everywhere..

Why is daytime dancing so much less popular than evening dancing? Is it because people are busy doing other things on weekend days, or because people prefer the 'night out' vibe of evening events?

I suppose I'm curious to know how other people feel about daytime dancing in general.

    Re: Daytime Dancing

    I'm all in favour.

At weekenders, the afternoons are often my favourite times. I also never understood why evening venues are sometimes so dark that you can't recognise people in the gloom.

But at classes across the land, when the lesson ends and freestyle starts, the first thing that happens is the lights go down, so there must be a reason why people like dancing in the dark.
    Love dance, will travel

Perhaps it's because Springsteen went on and on (and on and on) about it so much.

    Re: Daytime Dancing

I guess the general consensus is that people are less self conscious in the dark.

So do we think the light/dark thing is a fairly big factor? That wouldn't even have occurred to me.

I love daytime dancing there is something very decadent about it. I always try to go to the boat (HMS President) when I can.

I agree with DavidY about daytime dancing on weekenders, think that all adds to making weekenders special and one of my favourite parts of the weekend. A bit of dancing and sitting around chatting to friends - perfect (Now can't wait for Southport)

Sorry getting back to the original thread.
I would say the same as DavidY & Maxine, as I like both daytime & evening dancing. Daytime dancing at weekenders are great, chilled & relaxing atmosphere - basically agreeing with everyone on this thread.
    Southport here I come!

    Re: Daytime Dancing

I used to run tea dances and Miss Flicts was one of my favourite regulars.

Why did we stop? Unfortunately the reasons are mostly to do with business. These afternoons are more work than an evening dance, it's difficult to predict how many will come and they cost more to put on if you're going to put on food - but you can't get away with charging as much as you do for an evening dance as it's during the day. When we ran them we mostly broke even and had a fabulous afternoon - however, when it rained we lost money

Having said all of the above, I think we'll do a few one-off tea dances now I've reminded myself how much fun we had

Finding a venue can be hard too. Alot of venues have groups booked in on weekends during the day.

The other factor is that most organisors want a bit of Family Time at weekends.

I've done them before. At the mo im running a 5pm Sunday class / dance. They are never as popular as a eve dance so for orgs who are money driven (most im afraid), it's not worth doing.

I absolutely love dancing in the afternoons - it is so "civilised".

For me an ideal Sunday tea-dance runs from 2pm - 6pm (none of this 5pm start business), has relaxed, chilled out music (certainly nothing too frantic), encorporates a little bit of cake, a cup of coffee and a chat. All in all, a lovely sociable time - and still home in time for Lark Rise to Candleford and an early night so not too knackered for work the next morning. Bliss

It is a bl**dy shame that I can't make the Boat tomorrow. Too little notice given this time - I already had something else planned.

Some of my best dancing memories ever, were at the old Jango Tea dances! There was something magical about them

    Re: Daytime Dancing

On the Sunday of the Scottish Champs we had a tea dance - Tiggerbabe solved the cake issue by getting the regular forum (and non forum I think) bakers to donate food.. We then bought our teas and put the money towards the grand total..

Might be possible to do on a smaller scale (or a larger one?)

Just a thought if you have good bakers in your area.

Oh and dancing in the daytime is seriously cool - Kudos to stairman, Franck and Tiggerbabe for the last Kirriemuir (for example) - even if it is already over a year since then (drat renovations ) I still have happy memories of that outdoor floor

    Re: Daytime Dancing

I really enjoy the Edinburgh Sunday Tea Dances. There's a different atmosphere (not better/worse just different) dancing during the day. More relaxing I guess (regardless of music tempo).
