VW Polo cant turn wipers off

Just when I had made up my mind to go dancing at Berko tonight my wipers front and rear decide to permantely stay on. Fine in the rain but sounds like its farting when the blade hits the screen.

Any ideas what I can do?

Not having a great day so far as just experienced Finchleys' 4th power cut in 5 weeks aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh.

Lol did they have rear wipers in those days? Polo 2001.. Think it is the stalk which operates the front and rear wipers. Just another expense that I could do without right now.

The reason I asked in the 96 polo was notorious for it

I would guess your problem is a relay blown. If that is the case it shouldn't be too big a problem, infact, if you are feeling a little brave, one you can do yourself within 5 mins if you have the service manual.

    1) Locate the fuse box and relays (as stated in the owners book)
    2) written on the cover of the fuse box should be a guide as to what relay does what.
    3) pull your wiper relay out (can be a little stiff)
    4) pull out your accessories relay and place that in the wiper relay (or any others that fit)
    5) turn your ignition on and see if that fixes the problem.

If it does, you need to pop to your local car parts place with the broken relay and get another (should only be a couple of quid).

The other thing that can cause this problem is water getting in to the electrics causing a short. This can be a bigger problem as locating the short can be time consuming. I would recommend using a car electrics garage rather than a main dealer for this as they will have alot more experiance and locate the problem quickly.

If you do go for having a look yourself, it would also be a good time to take 5 mins to check none of your fuses have blown.

Let me know if you give it a go and get stuck, will have facebook on most of the day.

    I am indeed!

Car all fixed now! Had to have the whole stalk replaced which cost £67 so not too bad I guess.

Thanks for all your advice everyone

That's a coincidence. I had exactly the same problem with my Golf Diesel Turbo Estate before Christmas but it cost me £95 to get the stalk replaced.

The part cost around £30 but its so tricky to get to. My mechanic had to use a little camera on a stem to see what he was doing. Have a new problem now the brakes grinding which I am told is due to salt recently on the roads.
