And I'm happy for you...it can stay up in Scotland though.

Crikey, yours was already melting. We didn't have a massive amount but ours is going to take a while to melt especially on the back road past ours. What's depressing is we've now got fog which seems to hang around a lot and prevents too much melting from happening. Although our council is supposedly sending gritters out to non-priority routes now, rather than just the motorways and major A roads, so you never know, maybe our A road will get done soon.

Philsmove - good to see pics of Bristol! I spent most of my growing up time there and it's still the only place I miss living in.

    Re: Snow...

I love the snow, provided I don't have to get anywhere in a hurry. In these parts we seemed to be on a small island suffering a snow drought while everyone else was enjoying it. Just a few miles away it was a foot deep, where we had none.
At last it arrived on Tuesday last week, nearly 2 inches, and with a few top ups, I was gearing up to ski down to the sea. But although others were prepared to wreck their skis and snowboards on the slopes, once I got the boots out on Saturday, the thaw started, and now it's all gone.
I just need to head off to the Alps, or should that be Sussex?

I absolutely hate the stuff, i live in a farm cottage in the middle of nowhere, the last lot of snow saw us having to dig the snow away from the doors so we could feed out horses and as for my car - it was just a big white lump of snow that blended in on the drive!
I am really looking forward to going to Simon and Nicoles Spins and sparkles tomorrow but it is normally a 2.5 hour trip - if there is snow its a long way from home!

    Re: Snow...

Still hate it. Like DD, we're on farm in the middle of nowhere where nothing gets gritted so once it falls, we're stuck with it for ages.

We avoided most of it until today when we're now in the heavy snow belt for today. Am expecting about a foot. Luckily did my food shopping last night on the way home from work, but rest of the weekend's plans have been cancelled as well as worrying about getting to a crucial appointment on Monday.

(Next week's also meant to be my last week of work before maternity leave, including a handover couple of days for my replacement, so don't know when I'll be able to make it in).

Well, I live on a hill and for the past 2 hours I've been witnessing the most horrendous driving I've ever seen!

I'm on a bit of a hill but I've taken the car out and its ok if going slow. Which is good as I've to give two people a lift tonight to the Ceroc NI Ball. Made sure I could get the car down the road this morning and no more snow since so should be ok.

    Re: Snow...

I believe that snow fall at Christmas (especially the 25th), is extremely rare. The last time it happened was 1999. And in the 100 years prior to that only 4 times.

Dickens is to blame for the hype. All his books have it snowing at Christmas.

In turn this had something to do with Krakatoa.

    Re: Snow...

like snow.. do not like ice and slush.. took a slip/tumble down the stairs at Waterloo bridge yesterday .. did a very impressive body surf / splits from the top of one flight to the bottom ending up inverted with my jacket rucked up under my armpits showing off my gut .. and a number of people crowding round me asking if I was ok.

Was very impressive.. luckily I have the T-1 GG3-R gene (The head made out of rubber and the tail made out of springs) but my pride took a massive dent..

on the plus side it was pretty scenic elsewhere.. this is Covent Garden about 1 hour prior to the tumble..

Really? Where did you get that one from? I just had a look at the Met Office site, and they record eight instances of snowfall on Christmas day in Southeast and Central Southern England between 1960 and 1999 alone. For Northeast / East England, they record 16 such occasions.

Dickens lived between 1812 and 1870 - winters in the 1800s were generally far more severe than they are now - the same article states that Britain was "in the grip of a 'Little Ice Age'" - and a white Christmas would a lot more common, if not the norm - I imagine that Dickens was basing his observations on his own experience.
