Tried to search for this so apologies if it has been posted already:
What do you pack in your dance bag? I'm talking about for regular classes.. Not weekenders.
It always feels like I have a couple of bricks packed at the bottom of mine, but what about yours?
I'll post some ideas on a poll, with extra spaces, if a kind moderator could help later.
Cheers WT
Water (even tho' some venues don't like it).
Anti-bacterial hand lotion!!!!!
Mints/Chewing Gum
in addition to the things on the poll list: plasters, chewing gum/mints, tissues and a notebook and pen (to jot down any new moves that I want to remember in 6 months time!)
I also bring water - even though I buy a drink at the venue, I just like to carry water everywhere I go - I keep it in my dance bag as a backup.
Usually have at least two pairs of dance shoes, and sometimes three. Also a smaller bag with a fan, body spray, tissues, plasters, anti blister stick, painkillers, shoe brush, nail file and mints.
On class nights I usually just have one spare top, in case I need it - but at a freestyle its usually a complete change of outfit, plus an extra top or two.
isotonic lucozade
multi tool
golf ball (for base of foot)
ice pack
support bandage stuff...
usually painkillers and arnica
mini kilt for recognising my own bottle/glass/etc
Shall check tonight for any other miscellaneous nonsense I keep in there...
I've heard some people carry baby wipes in their dance bag. I wonder what those are for?
off the top of my head this is what lives in my dance bag
dance shoes - usually 3 pairs
spare heel tips
shoe brush
fan
pain killers - range of
arnica
golf balls - for my feet
strapping tape
elastaplast
deep heat patches
ankle warmers
talc powder
saftey pins
thera-band
wrist support
gum/mints
deoderant
pen and paper
cable for ipod
Golf balls
Ooh arr, I can just imagine the mayhem caused by rolling a few of those across a crowded dancfloor
Honestly, some seem to go prepared for battle rather than dance.
Everyone at my usual venues laughs at the size of my dance bag, but they're always the ones asking me to borrow a spare top, have some tissues/plasters/deodorant etc.
As well as several things on the list, I also have 2 fans, notepad, make up, scissors, spare pair of shoes/top, hair bands, water, umbrella, deo wipes, anti bac gel, pack of tissues, ipod, sat nav, gum.
Without checking I think i have most of the following;
Fan, talc, notepad, pen, deodorant, anti bac.gel, safety pins, blister stuff, plasters, shoes, spare tops, various pills and potions (strictly legal ), towel, shoe brush, energy sweets/tablets, scissors, tissues, bottle of water, Ibuprofen gel, ......must be some other stuff, but that's all I can remember.
Towel
Dance Trainers
Dance Shoes
Deodorant
Spare T Shirt
Glasses Case
Shoe brush
I've only got a small one, but it does all I need it to
Deodorant
Aftershave
Razor
Micro shaving spray
Compilation CD
Pen
Torch
Business cards
Spare T-shirt
oh, and my shoes.
I used to carry loads of stuff - most of the items listed on this thread. Nowadays I carry a pair of shoes in my dance bag. Two pairs if I don't know what the floor will be like. Of course I also bring a twin CD player, two microphones, speakers, stands, banners, laptop, lesson plans, notes, etc, etc. But my dance bag just has the shoes - even when I'm going to someone else's night.
I'm not sure when I changed what I carry. But I found I just wasn't using all that stuff. Of course I have some cash and a breath spray and tissues in my pockets - I transfer them to my jacket pockets or my dance bag at the start of the night.
Thanks for this - I have just realised that most of the additional stuff mentioned I already carry in my bag just my memory letting me down
I really like the mini kilt idea CJ... Is it a true highlander?
Andy - If you can give me lessons on how to minmimalise my dance bag my back would be forever grateful... I do tend to use most of my stuff though - with the occasional exceptions like Safety pins - But I would rather carry them than end up in when i need them but dont have them
Any more suggestions?
Cheers WT
yup - a torch is useful when you are under mixing desks trying to find one particular socket or when you are looking for light switches in the dark, or reading a CD, or finding any other thing that has secreted it's self in a dark crevasse. One too many times thinking "damn, wish I had a torch..." made me go get one. (just a keyring one, but big enough )
For those really dimly lit venues where a torch is required to avoid grabbing a body part that turns out *not* to be your partners hand.
Ring up someone you want to dance with using your mobile, then exchange grid references and use sat nav to meet up at an agreed location on the dance floor. Might be quite handy for the really large venues. It could also work the other way. Get someone to slip a tracking device into the pocket of the person you *don't* want to dance with. Watch where they are and successfully avoid them all night long.
Most items in dance bags are to do with sweat Therefore, the first thing you need to do is to stop sweating so much. This requires you to dance more efficiently and to take the occasional break to cool off - Q.E.D. no more shirts, drinks, deodorant, towels, etc. Get a drink at the venue, we supply iced water, tea & coffee for free at our venues - doesn't everyone? And we supply a squirt of bactericidal hand cleanser too.
Everything else is spares or emergency use only. Leave them in the first aid kit in your car and go get them on the one night in 100 when you need plasters, safety pins, etc.
p.s. I do have a torch in my cables flight case. I use it regularly for fiddling with things under tables. When I'm out dancing rather than working I refrain from fiddling.
