    Downloading problems?

I've noticed that watching Youtube clips has become really annoying because the video keeps stopping while the little arrow in the middle of the screen goes round and round. It didn't used to do this.

Does anyone know the reason for this happening, and how I can fix it? I can't watch BBC iplayer either for the same reason. It wouldn't even work when I tried to down load the programmes before watching, although I've downloaded other things with no problems.

I think its the internet is not coping with the huge increase in traffic, caused by i player and U tube and facebook

but it might be your computer

    in Windows
try Disk Cleanup, followed by defragment

Go to my computer - Hard Drives - and R click on " c drive" open properties,
Disk cleanup, is in the Genera Tab, defrag in is the tools tab

If you're using a Windows PC, open the Task Manager (Control, Alt - Delete) click on the processes tag and see if you have an application that is taking up your too much of your PC's processor. Ignore System Idle Process, that always appears to be using high levels of CPU but only uses the CPU when nothing else is using it.
There are lots of processes that take high levels of your CPU that can safely be deleted.
Do a Google search of "High CPU in the Task Manager" for more info.

    Try this link
    http://www.speadguide.net/downloads.php

It provides tools for testing and optimising your internet (TCP) settings

    Thanks, Royboy.
I have done a speed test and it is a laughable 249 wotsits. I'm told it should be nearer 2000. How do I set about improving this. Is it likely to be the modem, or is it thanks to Tiscali, my ISP?

Unless you have exceeded your download limit, it's 'unlikely' to be your ISP.

    Use this link:-
    http://www.plus.net/support/broadban...lowspeed.shtml

It provides guidance on how to check what your 'wotsits and thingymajigs' should be, and advice on where to go to try and resolve problems.

Thanks again for your quick response, Royboy. I've just given Tiscali a teensy little call (well, 10 minutes of going through menus, actually) and after speaking to a nice man from the technical department, somewhere in India, the speeds are back up to acceptable levels again. I didn't even have to go as far as asking for my mac number - that usually works well.

Isn't it lucky I pay Tiscali all this money every month so they can sort stuff out for me! I wonder if I can get a refund off them for all the months they've not been giving me the service I signed up for?

    So it was your ISP

Glad you got it sorted. And now you have the tools to keep an eye on them

Not at all! It's good to know I have the trusty Geeks of the Forum to turn to for help with my battles with technology.
It's usually either that or hurl the d*mned thing through the nearest window.
