Some businessmen do not regard losing customers that do not want to pay for anything as a major tragedy.

... I think you get more from the carrot approach than the stick. e.g. this forums reasonably unobtrusive ads and the few EXTRA features you get by registering.
The marketers I have been learning from test. They test everything. Carrots are for donkeys, they know what works on people.

They would know that this forums "unobtrusive" ads are mostly unseen. A search on eyetracking on youtube is most educational, and this is only the knowledge that you get for free.

...Also, I agree tailoring content is great if you can get people to register and there is enough reason for them to do so...
Test your ad blocker on an extreme example of an aggresive internet marketer not scared to deter prospects that are not going to sign. http://www.therichjerk.com/

One example of testing: He is currently testing at least three different versions of the privacy link on the left hand side. I do not know which one you will see.

    Re: Jive Magazine

I bought a copy of issue 1 from Lazy Dave's Sunday class in Bedford.

    Oh dear.

What should make Jive magazine different from other long time successful magazines is content. Just content. It could have imitated layouts, fonts, stylings from a host of proven successes and just have different pictures and copy. Long term successful magazines look the way they do because that works.

I stopped reading it before my poor old eyes started to bleed, and gave it away. I liked what I managed to read.

Simple rules: black text on white background, columns newspaper width. Tell stories. People love to read stories. "Paul met Susan at a Ceroc class" is a story. Too many anonymous pictures said nothing and left me cold.

I've just read edition 2. And I'm in it!

I got an honourable mention in a article about Britrock as "the 'completely mad' Andy McGregor". Also there's a photo me dancing in stockings and suspenders - with Gordon Pownall who is wearing a pair of stockings and suspenders on loan from, erm, me!
