One way monopolies stay monopolies by watching their competitors and imitating them in their zone. If the competitor has a good idea the Monopoly makes the same profit, and then rolls it out elsewhere and makes more, and drops the price in the competitor zone to the point where both make a loss there. The Monopoly can afford the hit. Whatever route the competitor will find it very hard to make money unless they have intellectual property protection. Jive Magazine could, with enough wit and resources protect themselves by signing up star contributors, perhaps using shares or deals instead of cash.
No, my interest in sailing up until now has been round-the-cans racing in keelboats. There's a whole load of dinghy sailing and offshore stuff that I have, in the past, flicked past. However, I've just had an Albacore dinghy delivered which I will be restoring over the winter and sailing next spring. As I've got this new interest I have been re-reading old editions, finding much that is now interesting.
I'd like to think the Jive Magazine will become a great success. But it will not do so if it is not supported by Advertising and Subscriptions.
And we need to make sure they get some great contributions too. In the first issue there's quite a bit about the various dance holidays, probably written by the advertisers. There's very little that couldn't have been written a year ago as there's no news. It would be fabulous to read reports and interviews with dancers who attended the actual holidays. And, as I said earlier, we need news and photos from recent competitions too.
Wouldn't it be great to have equipment reviews? What are the latest shoes from Bloch? Are they any good for MJ. Underwear for dancing? Bras that support, have straps that don't fall down but still allow you to raise your arms, pants that don't chafe or show through white sailors trousers, tights that aren't too clammy etc. And how about recommendations for weekender survival? What to eat? How to survive 3 days on 5 minutes sleep or how to avoid your weekender stalker - even "How to become a successful weekender stalker"
..... or it could be used by independent organisers to promote their views/activities ... To be fair, thats what many of the 'free' magazines on the web do, collate information form other (more learned) sources to promote their own services. Not saying that that is the intent here, but there is always this option.
As you've said though ... at least its out there and it will be down to the interest (or not) of Joe Public as to whether is sinks or swims.
I think you will find that all organisers are "independent". There are some big "independent" organisations out there but there no nationalised organisation for us to be "independent" from.
Of course there's Ceroc, which is a company. I've never felt any more independent from them than from Mojive or any other dance organisation. Ceroc may be national, but they are not nationalised like the NHS.
I believe this phrase "independent organisers" creates an us and them picture. There is no "us". It's every man for himself and we're all "independent". We may choose to co-operate with some of the "them" but that is up to "us".

I got a free copy on Friday, they were being given out at Revdrop's charity event. (Haven't read it yet though )
It sounds like a great idea to me, I'll be able to get information about dance events, news, all the stuff I need, its just its a shame its 30 years too late and the internet does all that now

If I could just order a single copy from the web site I'd be much more inclined to give the magazine a try. However, I'm not about to shell out for a subscription to a magazine that I have never read, as I have no idea whether it would be to my taste.
I guess that is the point, why would you sign up for a year, without getting a taste.
If the first edition was free, and available on the web to download, then, I might go for a sign up, but paper copy would be no good to me, as I run a paperless office as much as possible.
My filing cabinets are now in my computer and I tell everyone, please do not send me paper, if you can send via internet or email.
I used to have 5 large filing cabinets, I am rather happy now it is just on one laptop, with backups. The only "papers" I have now, can fit in one box, and even that bugs me a bit, that, for legal reasons, I need to keep them.
Planet Jive has been going for as long as I can remember and it is free - people think it is for Rock 'n Roll, but they actually encourage dates and news/features from any dance organiser.

Age is a question of mind over matter, if you don't mind, it doesn't matter
Leroy (Satchel) Paige (1906-1982)
Mickey Mouse's girlfriend, Minnie, made her film debut, along with Mickey, in "Steamboat Willie" on November 18, 1928.
That date is recognized as her official birthday.
That crossed my mind too. Especially as the interviews were pretty much the top teachers in MJ. If they're going to keep the level up, who is left to interview next month? My guess is that they won't have so many interviews.
If the subcription had been £50 I wouldn't have bothered. However, it's just £14 for the year. Think what else you could get for that price - maybe half a dozen coffees at Starbucks!
People would, and already do, use ad-blockers - if ad-blockers somehow don't work, the hover ads would annoy, and while you say people can then pay to remove said ads, such coercion is not that popular. I think you get more from the carrot approach than the stick. e.g. this forums reasonably unobtrusive ads and the few EXTRA features you get by registering.
Also, I agree tailoring content is great if you can get people to register and there is enough reason for them to do so.
