unwanted "editing (?) / marks" in Word

    Hi,
I have a PC and use Word 2002.

It was working fine until a few weeks ago, when it suddenly started displaying what I would describe as unwanted (editing?) marks.

When i have a new line, there is a big character like a reveresed "IP" type symbol constantly displayed.

When I put in a space, a dot appears between the words.

I got used to it, but have to email an assignment which the assessor will read on his screen (i.e. not print out)

Does anyone know how I can get rid of these marks on the screen ?

    Thanks very much
    John

    Firstly, don't worry!
Unless the assessor has the same setting switched on that you've accidentally put on, they won't see them.

However, if you still want to get rid of them...

    1. On your toolbar, you should see the Show/Hide formatting marks button .
    2. Click that and all the marks should disappear.

If you can't see that button...
    1. Select Options from the Tools menu.
    2. Select the View tab.
    3. The second section is Formatting Marks.
    4. Make sure that all of the boxes are un-checked.
    5. Click OK.

    Hope that helps.

    That'll be £50 please.

    Thanks Gav,

That's a great help, I tried various things before posting.

I wouldn't have managed it without your help.

    thanks again,

    In Word 2003 (for Windows),

Ctrl * ("Ctrl" and "Shift" and the "8" key)

switches display of these on and off.

You may have hit this by accident to switch it on.

Or if you've got a cat they might have switched it on for you (pesky little critters)...or children...
