Ceroc a Modern Jive and a fusion of......

    According to

    http://www.ceroc.com/

ceroc now is Salsa, Ballroom, Hip Hop, Tango and Jive

I was getting use to Jive,Salsa and Tango must have missed the Hip Hop and Ballroom additions.

Anyway I'm glad I know know 5 dances

Seriously how would you describe 'ceroc' as a dance

If we have 'ballroom' cant we expand

At least I now know we have Tango as part of ceroc and I dont have to do that thing called ..... 'foot work' and learn Tango seperately. Anyway ceroc must be 5 times harder to learn then Tango ??

ps Why isnt WCS in there ????? , its everywhere else

I've been heard it described as the "ultimate partner dance" before - reason for this is because you can add anything at all into modern jive. So in theory you could put all sorts into that description....

..but I don't think that definition is supposed to be definitive - I think it's just meant to give people an idea of what it is.

To answer your question how do I describe it (to non-dance friends)? I tell them that its a partner dance which is very open to interpretation & can danced to any type of music, more specifically its a mixture of different dance styles, mainly (then i'll pick 3-4 of the following) Salsa, Jive, Tango, WCS, Meringue, Hip Hop, Cha Cha Cha, Ballroom, Samba...

Ceroc styles seems to vary on where you dance, who your teacher or teachers are, what other styles of dance you have done/do and often what track is being played at the time.

Modern Jive nicks moves from so many different dance styles, simplifies them and makes them easier to teach and learn so that even those that never did any kind of dancing before in there lives (like myself) before Ceroc, can learn how to dance, to pretty much any kind of music with anyone that also knows Modern Jive, without the need to learn extensive routines and have a fixed partner.

When trying to describe MJ/Ceroc to friends, I usually say 'It's a partner dance that's dead easy to learn and can be danced to anything that has a sense of rhythm or beat. It has moves from so many other dance styles, that you get to watch Strictly and go "Hey, I can do that!".'

I think you would be hard pressed to find a form of dancing that involves partners that MJ doesn't have some slight similarities too, if you looked at enough different dancers.

Did you know that www.ceroc.com had a LearnToDanceSalsa page? and a LearnToDanceTango page? and that both of them point to a page linking to normal Ceroc classes?

    Hmm...

Hmmmm ... I can't seem to find anything that doesn't describe CEROC as a fusion of Salsa and Jive with an optional 'taking moves from Ballroom, Tango, hophip, etc)

Have I missed something ... before I jump in and criticise CEROC for being disingenuous??

Personally, I see it as a fusion of swing as well, and it have evolved to incorporate other dance styles/moves.

Aha!!! I just found it!!! It seems that the bod(s) who updated the CEROC.COM home page, doesn't seem to have communicated to anyone to change the specific national sites.

Yes, I don't agree with their definition, and think that it is probably quite unhelpful. It's far better to be more specific about the core dance, otherwise newcomers really will not know what to expect..... it starts to sound very vague (which it might be ... but that's not the point!!! lol]

although I would qualify it by saying that out of the 2 categories Gav has rightly identified, women fall mainly in the latter, and men in the former, except me and Gav that is, ooh ooh I've just remembered another one, Jivelad is relatively normal !!

I'd add 'delusional' to Gavs list!

Would anyone care to elaborate on the behavioural symptoms that may be considered representative of each category?

I would place "sleeze-bags" as a sub heading under the "social-retards" category.

I've recently introduced a (long distance) female friend to MJ, & the stuff she has to put up angers me to be honest, - that, and the amount of men she tells me who are awful to dance with - heavy handed, plain weird (!), out of time, can't lead... - some of which then blame the 'mistake' on her Following. I am hoping so much that she sticks with it and things improve.... - it would be such a shame if she decided to give up because of these types of people
