Total lack of sound from my PC

    Can anyone help with advice.

For some unknown reason my PC refuses to put any sound through my speakers.

I am unsure what happened just before this occurred as it was Mrs Par and my grandson who were using it whilst I was at work and of course MR NOBODY must have done it.

I have tried to go through settings and it appears that all is in order but I cannot be sure.

Are there any checks I can do or are there any ways to work out what has happened to my sounds.

I am sure I have not put enough info on this post so any questions ???

    yours in anticipation. Under Par

    Ok.

    Potential problems:
    Speakers
    Sound Driver
    Sound Card
    Configuration
    Virus
    Corrupted Op System

    I think that's it!

    Does it work with headphones?

Check device manager. It windows reporting any problem with the sound card
[My computer ->right click ->Manage -> Device Manager]

Sound card. Is it firmly placed into slot (or built-in)

Configuration. Presumed ok, cos you checked.

Virus. Presumably ok, because you're sensibly protected

Corrupted OS. Presumably ok, because everything else works ok.

    Anything else, anyone??

We're you at the firing range before you went home?
Still got your iPod earphones in?
I'd see the doctor before you do any of that complicated computer stuff...

well first thing I did was try headphones and I got sounds through them so... maybe its my old speakers packed up.

if I get sound thro headphones does that mean the sound card is working?

    Yup!!!

    Sound card is ok.

So, sound is getting through to headphones, and so sound is getting to the headphone jack socket.

Were the speakers using the same jack socket?

If so, it strongly suggests a speaker fault.

If using another socket from the PC, it still might be a hardware fault [loose wire to the jack plug socket, maybe] ... but unlikely.

Do your speakers work on anything else? MP3 player, stereo unit, TV?

You can disable the speakers and still have the audio jack working - I would look in the bios as it boots up (normally F2 as it boots) - there is usually an option to turn the speakers on/off). If it is on, I would then look at the device manager (control panel or r-click on "my computer") and make sure that there is no red cross against any speaker or sound card type thingie.

    There are also lots of options & things in the "audio properties" bit from the control panel (or r-click on the speaker on the status bar) - make sure that they are all looking OK. {including in the "advanced" buttons}

Re: Total lack of sound from my PC

well I have found that the jack plug at the front of the tower lets the speakers and headphones work so it must be the jack socket at the rear of the tower that is kaputt..

problem solved speakers work fine and soundcard works fine...just have to plug in at front..

A VERY BIG THANKYOU to everyone for your help
