Well, we may have had this before but that was 'then' and this is 'now' And I think its worthy of a fresh thread with fresh ideas

So guys, its 'YOUR' forum.. have you got any suggestions?

IMO, more posts would be good and I'd like to see some new blood.

So, if your a lurker and you've been hesitant to post... now's yours chance to take the platform and explain why Common guys, don't be shy!

(I would like to say, we don't bite but sometimes we do! but you have my word as MOD that I'm keeping an eye on the thread and anyone who picks on a newby poster, will have to me to answer to! )

To be more involved with the forum....

    Be knowledgeable

and lastly post infractions and warnings publicly

Anything else while your at it?
I did think of this analogy in a dull moment at work.

Moderating, it seems to me, should be a bit like running a meeting.

There's some associated admin (eg. setting out an agenda). But the main part of the role is to "chair" discussions. This means occasionally asking questions that no-one else has asked, and stopping discussion that's unproductive. But you don't have to be a big part of that discussion - by and large the input to a meeting should come from others.

    Does that sound about right?

Re: Who Killed The Ceroc Scotland Forum?

Here's my clever idea for the day:

I think when you start a thread you should have the option to moderate it.

That way no one can ever complain the forum isn't run how they want it to be since the parts you were interested in would be.

You could also nominate friends or existing mods to help or take over your thread.

People would get attracted to threads started by moderators who get a reputation for maintaining good threads. If you didn't like how someone moderates (because they allowed too much bullying for example) you could avoid their threads, instead of the whole forum.

If you liked the topic but not the moderator you could simply start a new thread with the same topic. The most popular moderating style would attract the most posts.

    Can the software do that?

    Here are the benefits:

People who have left because of bullying would come back, start their own threads.

People who want more serious dance discussion could moderate threads accordingly.

    It would be entirely democratic.

There would be more choice, and nothing in the existing set up would be lost.

This might only apply to certain threads, certain areas of the forum, and maybe only to one version of the thread.

Certain threads - 2 existing moderators have to give approval?

Certain areas where expertise is being swapped (Geek?, DJ?, )

versions of thread - click on view full or view moderated.

    -----------

Perhaps a bit of self moderation? Choice of submit buttons? e.g Submit, Joke, Graffiti, have a go at .... ? only the serious submits get archived?

    ------------

The fact is the forum is not the proper place for a serious discussion. It is like trying to have a business discussion in a busy local pub.

The fact is that sometimes the local pub is the only place that a significant conversation can happen. Twice in my life, that I can recall, I have had chats that were worth hundreds of thousands of pounds in inappropriate places (thought of two more as I write).

There is so much idle chatter on the forum that serious decision makers spurn it. The collective experience and intelligence of the membership is denied them. It affects the dance experience of the membership very little, but helps deny it to all the members we could have, and don't.

Like Lory listening to the webinar a couple of minutes of drivel is enough to get it switched off. (It is not beyond possible that that was deliberate ploy. They only want to deal with serious and determined prospects.) Further along I found a concrete example of why 37 unsatisfied customers were more important than hundreds of thousands that did not complain. Why people complain, why they don't come back, is one of the most significant pieces of marketing knowledge. Getting rid of bad customers, and only bad customers, is one of the secrets of success.

Did you mean to post this here, or was this supposed to go into the 'Why is the CS Forum Doomed?' thread?

We'll only know which thread it belonged to, 'after' the photo evidence has been posted

I've mentioned this forum to a couple of friends who were immediately put off because they thought it was only a forum for Scottish dancers only. So to reiterate a point someone else made somewhere on the other thread, I think you'll get more new posters if you rename the forum - and have a sub-forum for Scotland.

Franck's Ceroc Forum would be nice, except for the c and the ' losing searchers.

    Nah...

After one explains that it is really a global forum, then they are just using the fact that it is a Ceroc Scotland forum as an excuse not to join.

Possibly a small percentage are put off, but we don't need anymore small minded people on the forum.

Re: Improving the forum.. suggestions and ideas please

I follow one or two other forums and sometimes come across threads on them that may be applicable for discussion on this forum.

I have not started threads using ideas from these other forums because, I suppose it may be like cheating etc.

Does anybody else have any views on using ideas from other forums etc for debate here?

I'm not worried about it at all - if you have a view or a challenge or question, or if there's a good thread elsewhere, then why not start it off here. Chances are the forumites are different people and there'd be a lot of different views.
