    Retrieving mobile phone nos.

A friend's mobile phone has died. It won't take any charge and now won't turn on at all.
Anyone know if she can get the numbers that were stored in the phone memory back out of it? An dif so, how?

    Cheers

    Ok ... a few ideas.

    a) I assume that all numbers were on the phone and not the sim card. If not, swap sim card to a new phone and writing them down is no bad thing.

    b) If the phone has a usb lead, try linking up to a PC, and seeing what can be pulled off the phone.

    c) Some phone companies (like O2) have an online back up facility for the phone book up .... this generally requires that the phone book is backed up first, but might be worth a try

    d) Online billing might give you some of your phone numbers.

    e) I assume that she hasn't 'active synched' to outlook or anything ... or they would all be on there.

    f) Get onto facebook with the message 'phone has died, please message me your number'!

    g) Take it down to the shop! And ask! [Maybe someone else has done this?????]

    Is the obvious too obvious?
If it will not charge - maybe the battery has gone to silicon heaven

Find some one with a similar phone and try their battery.

That would be the very first step for me

First step for me would be to plug it into a usb port - it powers itself from there (unles its really old) so no battary needed. and to what magic boy said.

Sadly they were in the phone, not on the SIM

    I'll pass this on

    Unlikely methinks!

    Thanks I suggested that but

Maybe pop the case off and clean out the accumulated fluff from around the power button?

Most phones I've used in the last few years power on themselves when you connect via USB, you do not to press the power button.

    Re: Retrieving mobile phone nos.

if the phone is dead there's not much you can do about it. if none of the preceeding steps work then I think the best/only option is to get your friends to give you their numbers again.

you COULD try taking the phone apart and looking at the switch contacts. if what Ducasi says doesn't work you could attempt to short out the switch.. although only do this if you're ABSOLUTELY sure you know what your doing. You probably won't shock yourself.. but shorting out a Lithium Ion battery is never a good idea.

if the contact is made and the phone doesn't come on, and you're sure you do have a fully charged battery.. well. mark it up as a learning experience and keep a copy of numbers on the sim card.. just in case

DS is right.. assuming it has USB.

also make sure the battery contacts are clean.. the eraser on top of a pencil is great for cleaning contacts.. just make sure no rubber particles fall into the phone

My 2-year old Nokia N95 doesn't charge or switch on when you stick a USB plug into it.

Is that an example? or an exception? Cos I don't think that the example proves the rule!!!! lol

Just a data point. DS's earlier assertion that a phone will power itself from USB "unless it's really old" is false, unless 2 years old is "really old."
