Does anyone know why school holiday dates in Scotland and England are almost a month apart?
I know we have sweeping generalisation slightly different climates and daylight hours do actually differ somewhat North to South but the difference in timing seems rather large for neighbouring countries.

In fact, each Authority is different. My girls go to school in Angus and I teach for Aberdeenshire and we have different holidays.

I know I'm only an incomer (though that's why I asked the question when I moved up here too!), but I believe it's related to the potato harvest of old.
Also, in Highland, (which is the only area of Scotland I've lived in), I think it may also be to do with the increased daylight in summer. It barely gets dark up here in summer, or only for an hour or two. Shifting the school holidays allows families to make the most of the light nights?
