Rosetta Stone.. is it worth the price tag?

Twirly and I have a need to pick up Italian before end of April next year (for the honeymoon )

I'd seen adverts for Rosetta Stone online and on TV and had also ran through a very cut down demo version included with a PC mag a while back and was impressed.

However it's pretty darned expensive. £399 for the full course (stage 1,2 & 3) but cheaper if you buy just 1, 2, 1 & 2 etc etc.

it's a very effective learning method and convenient as with other commitments We can't always guarantee our availability for classes.

Anyone used this and can comment on it's effectiveness? Would I be better off going to a night class? or buying a Book/CD combo from Waterstones?

Am reminded of hours sitting in the language lab at high school being taught French parrot fashion. "Écoute et répète" <ding!>

I'm not sure about Rosetta Stone but I've got Michel Thomas' course which is only audio based

It basically aims to teach based on building up sentences and doesn't start with teaching you how to say your name and how old you are ...

That said, I've not got that far with it yet (too hectic) but have remembered what it did teach me*

*Though "non e possible per me cosi" may have limited uses... (it's not possible for me that way)

I had a half-4rsed go at the Earworms Spanish CD a little while back and I picked up quite a lot of useful stuff. If I had an aim in mind (such as actually going there ) I suspect I'd find it more that suitable.
    Plus they're only £15.

I guess it depends if you want to learn to be fluent, or learn enough to make the most of your experience.

well baring in mind my grasp of language is .. erm .. flawed at best!

two memorable moments from highschool. one where I got mixed up between the words for "Strawberry" and "cheese" ('fromage' or 'fraise' or is it the other way round? ) and proudly told the class "I love cheese ice cream!" and the time I was , perhaps in hindsight, a little too reliant on my study mate.. who had a sense of humour. and when it was my turn for a little french roleplay stood up infron of the class in conversation with the french teacher and after a brief discussion of my name, nationality, my age etc I then exclaimed "je voudrez manger* votre chien!" which I have since learnt does NOT mean "I would like to pet* your dog"....

I'm just thankful he didn't make me say anything too rude!

You bloody liar! There's only one Spanish phrase you learnt - and that was "Una Mojito, por favor". I dunno what was funnier...the fact that, that was the only phrase you had learnt, or that you'd learnt Spanish to go to Cyprus.

That's EXACTLY what you said to the waiter in Cyprus when he said he was closing the bar.....funnily enough, he couldn't understand a word you were saying.
