It is that time of the year again............fit young East European ladies making grunting sounds as they lash some hairy balls back and forth to each other.
Meanwhile, Wimbledon has started and so...........a few discussion points:
1. Are you supporting Andy Murray? (if not - why not?)
2. Views on the grunting? Why do only ladies seem to grunt?
3. Best looking tennis player? (in 2009 and ever?)
PS On the outro for 'Today at Wimbledon' they played Paloma Faith 'Stone Cold Sober' (straight in at no. 17 btw) - the reason seemed to be that John Inverdale and John McEnroe were getting thru a large jug of Pims......
I love Wimbledon, but am quite behind in who's who apart from the main men & (bizarrely) quite a few of the women.
1. Yes
2. v. weird. When I played tennis I didn't grunt even though I put in lots of effort (they're obviously fitter & more experienced than I ever was, so even though they play at a higher level, the need to grunt shouldn't be any higher)
3. Strangely I'm quite liking Murray's shorter haircut, but I do have a soft spot for Federer.

Well he is a sportsman - not a stand up comedian or a professional happy-clappy-chappy. (As an aside, he was actually laughing his tits off in that pre-Wimbledon interview with a lady from GMTV).
Anyway - back to important matters.............one feature of the tennis which I noticed a few years ago (not sure when it first came in) is in the doubles. After each point, the partners absolutely must go to each other and do a 'lo-five' touching each others hands, as they plan the next point. It looks a bit weird after they have just lost a point to run eagerly to each other and whoa - er - we lost that point - still lets touch each to make sure we are still friends (or to check that we both exist).
Maybe they could restrict it to just at the end of each game.
(Having said that, if I was playing Mixed Doubles with Sharapova, I might think differently).
Personally I think it's super that Gregory has done so well at yon tennis lark.
There aren't many grass courts in Cumbernauld and for a while he couldn't even get his first serve past Dorothy so it's quite an achievement.
1. Short answer - No, I'm a Federer fan. Longer answer - I want to see a Federer vs Murray final, and let the best tennis gameplay be the winner.
2. I suspect its because the grunting helps them generate more power for the groundstrokes and other shots that become more effective and harder to counter. My layman observation is that the ladies' tennis now favours those who can hit forceful groundstrokes and other shots with more power, vs. those who are more into finesse and good court sense (e.g. the Williams sisters, Mauresmo vs. Henin, Hingis).
I could be wrong but that's my personal impression. And no, I don't mind the grunting.
3. Best looking tennis player ? That's a toughie, I havent been keeping up to date with tennis players since I arrived in the UK. I'd probably nominate Gisela Dulko purely on seeing her recently when she beat Maria Sharapova.
I'm sure we'd see at least a hint of a smile on your face, if you won a DWAS at the Troxy Stewart
p.s. I saw a picture of you and Fletch, taken by TSH on FB yesterday and I commented that you looked much taller and at least 3 stone slimmer (TRUE)
Hey, I bet your smiling now?

Well I'm sitting here watching the Murray v Roddick semi-final :- after seeing Roddick win the first set 6-4 by seizing the first break point opportunity, that would've gone against the script!
EDIT: Although Murray just broke back immediately in the 2nd set and is yelling out. I guess he's a lot more animated now to try and win the 2nd set!
A real humdinger this could be!
Well a bit of a disapointment but
Let’s not forget, this time last year we were a bit surprised Murry made the quarter finals.
He is only 22 I think Fred Perry was about 25 when he won his first Wimbledon
And let's not forget Bunny Austin - who got several mentions this year, as the last British man to get to the Wimbledon final. He was also the first bloke to wear shorts at Wimbledon: before that I guess they just used to play in their Y-fronts
He had an interesting career - playing tennis with Charlie Chaplin and being ostracised from the venerable All-England Club for being a conscientious objector/advocate for the Oxford Group.

So whats going to happen on Sunday?
