Re: Ceroc Southport Scorch 2009 Review Thread

Once again I had a great time at Southport. Ceroc are of course now running things instead of JA but not much has really changed - SP is, and always will be a great place for a week-ender, and Ceroc have certainly not done anything to spoil things.

So, on to the details and following the usual format:

    The Good

    - The weather could hardly have been better (but see also "The not so good")
    - Evening outside dancing is always special and the weather was perfect for this.
    - Flashy new water coolers in the main room and the Latin room and no nasty wet patches
    - Lots of fans, even in the blues room (and boy were they needed).
    - Latin room less dark than previously.
    - Live TV feed of all the main room classes on your chalet TV.
    - Pretty good floors to dance on in all the rooms (with a couple of defects - see below).
    - Great atmosphere and, as has been said, absolutely no sign of cliques or hot-shottyness that I saw.
    - Some lovely surprise last minute attendees such as Minnie M. and CJ.
    - Good gender balance and not horribly over-crowded at any time.
    - Frank and Sheena's blues connection class was brilliant.
    - Enjoyed most of the music, especially Rachael's set in the blues room on Sunday night.

    The not so good

    - Holes in the wooden area of flooring in the centre of the Latin room which looked positively dangerous.
    - A couple of annoying ridges on the otherwise very good flooring of the outside decking dance area.
    - Although the weather was fabulous it did actually make it too hot for dancing at times and stamina suffered.
    - Missing the start of the barbecue (personally I would prefer this to be late afternoon / early evening rather than starting in the middle of the day)
    - A BMW that was overtaking me in the outside lance of the M6 having a blow out just as it was right along side my car. Luckily the traffic was relatively light at the time and the driver kept control, but it was a heart stopping moment.
    - The usual shambles over the booking of sack the DJ slots (will do a separate thread on this later)

    The dances

Simply fantastic - far too many to mention individuals here but I have to give a special mention to "The Scottish Lasses". It was a really special treat to dance with so many marvelous dancers from north of the border. All of you were just brilliant

No doubt there is other stuff I have forgotten, but this will have to do for now. Roll on LUX!

Apart from less freestyle rooms, less variety in teaching, and no longer being very distinct from other Ceroc weekenders, which can be had closer to London ?

Is the experience really very different from Breeze (aside from the very welcome Scottish dancers) (which incidentally makes it difficult to choose the next Ceroc weekender - Breeze or Splash).

Re: Ceroc Southport Scorch 2009 Review Thread

Can a mod re-title this thread to make clear it refers to the May event?

I had a great time, my weekender experience is getting pretty predictable
    * Too much beer Fri night? Check
    * Hangover Sat morning? Check
    * Hair of the dog socialising Sat? Check
    * Unable to dance much Sat evening due to the excesses of the daytime? Check
    * Great afternoon dancing Sun? Check
    * Relaxed dancing through to the final tracks Sunday evening? Check

The weather was fantastic all weekend and meant Saturday just became one long social day in the 'round', the Spacehopper stuff was fun, Chris (I think) did a great job on the PA. Other than a period on Saturday evening where my feet spoke a different language to my mind, I enjoyed all my dances this weekend. Enjoyed most of the music especially Rocky's S'Funk on Sunday afternoon which was ideal for the timeslot. Had some great chalet mates, lots and lots of laughs (and embarassing photos) and there's definitely something about the Southport layout that gives this weekender a boost over any of the others I have done. Not sure on total numbers (someone said a 1000?) but floorcraft and gender balance was never an issue for me.

On the downside, I missed dancing with a few people I'd like to have caught up with. Also got caught in the M6 problems on the way up which saw traffic sitting stationary for an hour outside Keele services but I figured after 10 or so clear runs up there previously I was probably due a delay. Coming back I chose to carry on the main M6 not the toll road that I usually take and it was fine so something for others to bear in mind for future?

My most baffling decision of the weekend is probably a tie between the S'Funk era woolen V neck I chose to wear for Rocky's set (and saw me dripping sweat like I was in a sauna ) or heading a spacehopper whilst wearing sunglasses giving me a lovely cut across the bridge of my nose. D'oh.

Southport was fantastic, I had a really lovely time. Unfortunately I had to leave on Sunday and I missed out on dancing with loads of people I had intended to, I will endeavour to make sure that doesn't happen again but I certainly made the most of the time that I spent there. The music was great and the best for me was Mike Ellard's Swing Set in the Blues room in the afternoon, absolutely fabulous, did not sit one track out.

Didn't do the tango classes, but I was told that they tried to teach a volcada, how did that go for those that joined in? I think volcadas are pretty advanced stuff. I enjoyed the Milongas in the night time, thank you to Mark for the music there. In fact the music all over the weekend was fantastic and I even found myself enjoying what they played for WCS .

As always it is lovely to catch up with people, nice to see the Scottish contingent, and I enjoyed my dances with each and everyone I danced with. Lovely to meet and dance with Amr for the first time, and there was a guy called Roger from Portsmouth, not sure if he is on here, with whom I had a great tango tanda with. Finally meeting and dancing with Barry Schnikov, but missed the whale, how did that happen!! I think you had an invisible cloak ha ! And Mr Tiger Sexy Pants x

The sun, the fun when sharing with Scarface and Trouble, moaning about that bloody shower, [it has to be done everytime ], making sure the lecky got topped up, everyone was chilled and friendly, dancing in the sunshine on the decking, seeing old friends and making new friends, catching up with the local dance people and catching up with those I only see from time to time, watching the space hoppers, dancing and watching the dawn break, fabulous music, feeling like you should be going to bed and then finding your second and third wind, headbanging to heavy rock with Scarface at 6am, partying outside..... I had a really great weekend.

Wow. This weekender will be a hard one to beat, by far the best I've been to - it was also the first where I've been able to stay all of Sunday and that was cool.

Spent most of my time in the Blues room as I'm kinda falling in love with Blues. Southport set a benchmark for great dances, I can't remember any amazingly bad dances in the Blues room and only one or two in the main room.

For the first time, I had what felt like the perfect dance, no one else on the floor, great sexy music, no mistakes made, eye contact, close body contact, slow and sensual, everyone else faded away. Really awesome, and she kept coming back for another.

    The Good:
    Dancing outside, sunbathing, playing frisbee.
Not going to bed until the very, very end.
Being introduced to (and molested by) Lory and co. as well as probably every forumite here without realising.
Reduced numbers of the "Beautiful Elite"
Atmosphere overall was just great, everyone I met was in a great mood, smiley, talkative, encouraging and so on.
Dancing lots with my favourite girls and a few new faves.

    The Bad:
Nothing, the weekend was a bargain.

    The Awesome:
I pretty much crapped my pants when Muse - Supermassive Black Hole came on in the main room.

Talking Re: Ceroc Southport Scorch 2009 Review Thread

Well Southport was pretty much as great as usual. Was perfect weather. Not a raindrop in sight.

I mostly stay in the blues room. Much to the dismay of my mate. Which is just turning into a wcs NUT!! (Don't worry Sinbad I'll wcs myself into the ground come skeggy)

Though I don't feel like I dance as much as I have done in the past it still was great. Either that or am getting uber fit.

Best moment for me was sitting in the sack the DJ slot watchin people dance to my tunes. As my friends could tell i was pretty nervious as it was my sack the dj cherry so to speak. Or it could of been too much sunshine from the spacehopper party. Anyway am glad i did it. Though 30 mins felt real short.

Best class I went to was the double trouble class. Was really good fun now if only i can remember how it went...

Worst moment for me was find out that I didn't pack my spacehopper plug in my room DOH!!! (Anyone got a spare plug??)

Draggin Spartak Lad back to southport was a bonus for me. Nice to see you'e been smitten by the dance bug once more matey!

I'd say the daytime dancing is very different because there's so much more space in the "Queen Vic" at Southport - more space outside, and with the doors open the inside area merges into the same dance floor.

More space=much more relaxed and enjoyable dancing. At Breeze I was constantly worrying about floorcraft on a small and cramped outside dancefloor.

I wandered into the main room early Sunday evening (when the power cut out in the blues room) and was rather surprised to hear it too!!! (Was this the same time you heard it??!)

Re: Ceroc Southport Scorch May 2009 Review / aftermath Thread

What can I say.. quite simply, it was just brilliant!

The weather of course, played a huge part! It completely changes the atmosphere and everyone seems happier and more relaxed and its definitely contagious!

There was less emphasis on the dancing and more emphasis on being sociable!

Luckily for me, we left just early enough to miss all the hold ups and was able to enjoy Friday afternoon, sitting in the sun, catching up with old friends, which really set the pace for the whole weekend!

The BBQ was AMAZING, I've never seen so many smiling faces. Major credit to whoever set up the sound and PA system and a huge thank you to Franck and Tiggerbabe for providing the BBQ's and to Rob Ambridge for building them! And to Mark and co for organising the Spacehopper bonanza!

For me, the Milonga's were a major highlight. Something suddenly clicked into place with my following too I'm not sure if it was the same guy Ruby but I also danced with a guy from Portsmouth, although i'm sure his name was Richard but WOW, he got my legs and feet doing things I didn't even know they could do!
And there were lots of other lovely leads too, lots of them I already know well but this weekend I've completely blown away with their progress and at this point I have to mention a few names, Ant, Marc Forster, Rob Ambridge, Warren and Amr, to the point that at the end of Sunday nights Milonga, I got quite emotional. The music was perfect too!

I loved all the tagging dances too (affectionately known as 'swapsys' now) KPS ad AMR are becoming quite expert at this!! DTS is already a master! lol

Lastly, one of the funniest moments was right at the very end of the whole weekend, Marc was playing the VERY LAST song of the whole weekend.."life's a Beach' and 3/4's of the way through the power cut out.. a very loud GASP rang out and everyone stood there paralysed to the spot.. the silence was deafening..

when suddenly someone shouted out.... LIFE'S a B*CH!

OMG, I couldn't breathe for laughing!

Of course it couldn't end like that, so we got about 4 bonus tracks!

What a fabulous weekend from the moment of arriving to the moment we left. My first Southport so I had high hopes and thankfully the weekend lived up and exceeded my expectations

    Highlights
    · Meeting some of you from Scotland, thanks to the ‘Whale’ for plying me with wine, Tiggerbabe for the wonderful homemade waffles and Bat Nurse for the best tasting and again homemade marshmallows
    · Some great dances with some regulars from London area and Midlands too many to mention. Dancing for the first time with Sinbad, Spartak Lad, Tiger pants (Mr. Pants to me) fabulous wiggle very envious, ducasi and Wuzzle
    · Being touched by the hand of Franck Twice and dancing with CJ
    · Sitting round chatting and being generally chilled and sociable and great to see Rubyred again.
    · Laying out in the sunshine first thing – what a bonus
    · Going to bed when the sunshine just started to get warm 7am
    · The water set up in the blues room jugs with lemon and lime slices and ice, what a nice touch
    · Music in the Blues room loved most of it but my particular favourite was Tiggerbabes first set
    · Starting to fall asleep on some guys shoulder about 6:30 am on the Saturday definitely time to call it a rather special day.

    Lowerlights
    · Very few
    · The 7 hour drive down (but I would not let that dampen my spirit)
    · The feeling of absolute exhaustion I feel today
    · Being outed as a slight stalker by georgious dancer telling Franck that I only did his workshop to hear his voice, It is true just loved the soft Scottish accent but don’t worry Franck I’m a can’t be arsed kind of stalker so your safe in Scotland

Did not make it out of the blues room all weekend so can’t comment on that and only did the one workshop and I enjoyed it.

Have put a few photos on here but most are on facebook.

Well Well what can I say. It was a fantastic weekender. Best weekender to date. Much of it has been said before, great weather, great music, great people, great atmosphere.

I spent more time freestyling this time than doing the workshops altho I did pick up a copy of the DVD just in case i missed something.

Thanks everyone for the fantastic dances. It was great to dance with so many people. I think my highlight was the blues room

It was great to see Tim & Jade's routine again. It's brilliant!

It was also great having lots of people from Cardiff there

Roll on next weekender. Almost tempted to do Lux. :P

Re: Ceroc Southport Scorch May 2009 Review / aftermath Thread

This was my first ever weekender and to be honest I’m not quite sure what I envisaged but it certainly wasn’t anywhere near as inspired as the reality….

The reviews below pretty much sum up the experience for me which was phenomenal. To add a personal touch, my fun started with 3 Glaswegians and an Oz trying to squeeze their luggage into a car big enough for 2…. to Mr Gilmour whose car truly is THE Tardis! The journey down was such a giggle…thanks guys!

I arrived just in time for dinner with great company at Chez Zimbabwean! Fantastic food, new friends and plenty of advice on weekender survival techniques , started the weekend off on a high!

Dancing through the night and watching the sunrise over the patio on Saturday morning was an experience I will never forget... to those of you whose dances made it so wonderful - I thank you!

Mark and Lindsey’s space hopper party – what can I say; the extensive finger bruising to my inner thighs due to being “Batman’s” wheelbarrow demo were well worth the fun and frolics encountered during the races. Well done for the organisation of the afternoon !! And a special thank you to my 3 fellow finalists, who took getting beat by a girl in great spirits! So that’s my place at the next Southport secured…

Saturday and Sunday are a blur of sunshine, surprises, fun, great music, fantastic dances, meeting new friends and sharing with old friends. Too many to remember by name but the memories live on…as will Sunday’s Milonga, my many tagging/swapsey dances, my first multiple chocolate orgasm and an unexpected Tango in the Blues room…

The weekend was more special than I had hoped for – thank you for sharing!

Re: Ceroc Southport Scorch May 2009 Review / aftermath Thread

This was by far and away my best weekender ever – had a fantastic time.

For once I managed to turn up with no injuries and an intact car which was an excellent start, although I still managed to lose my chalet mate… so if anyone is single but doesn’t want to be, arrange to share a chalet with me and you’ll probably have hooked up with another dancer (who is also at the weekender) by the time we get there… still, I got the chalet largely to myself and so could make as much mess as I liked.

I usually find that Friday nights are a bit cr@p at weekenders for me, however this one was outstanding. Arrived in the blues room about 11ish, and then hardly sat down as I kept getting asked to dance – which basically set the tone for the rest of the weekend. Normally I slope off to bed quite early, but stayed till 3 when I got two huge cuddles from Franck, and then a sublime dance with him. Decided to call it a night on a high

    The good:
Sleeping well, despite having a chalet almost on top of the venue, though sleep during the day proved impossible (well, apart from after a few glasses of wine at the barbecue!). And on the plus side, nipping back to change/use the loo when the ladies was out of loo roll/had a sodden floor proved very handy.

NickC’s massage (though thanks to that I didn’t make it to either the races or Franck and Sheena’s class on Saturday afternoon).

Seeing loads of friends I hadn’t seen for ages.

Distributing Beo’s baking – and no Georgious, you can’t have him, although if a cake-taster deputy is ever required, you’ll be first in line for the job!

Winding up doing the excellent Slo and Slinky class with a fixed partner by accident…

Doing Franck’s Jook Joints with Georgious on Sunday, and almost having to scrape her off the floor as she was laughing so much at Franck – you naughty man

Getting my own back on CJ with a hairpull move and then hijacking (and I never hijack!) his lead as he was trying to eye someone up…

Dancing my feet off with lots of wonderful dancers till I ached from top to toe. Although I spent most of my time in the blues room, I did venture into the main room a few times and had lots of fun – including the fastest dance I think I’ve ever had!

Being able to dance in my heels again after 18 months in flats.

Travelling back with Rhythm King and singing along to his Abba collection for about 200 miles.

    The somewhat indifferent:

The barbecue I didn’t enjoy as much as last year’s I’m afraid. There didn’t seem to be a central table to put stuff to share, and most people (whom I didn’t know) seemed to be sitting down in little groups rather than mixing and chatting when I arrived. 1pm was too early for me, so got there rather later with Miguel. As there wasn’t any shade where the main barbecue was taking place (and I didn’t want to be the one being barbecued), we wound up setting up “veggie corner” well away from where most people were. Georgious joined us and I had a lovely time, just not what I was expecting, and I’d like to have mixed more – still lots of people I want to meet.

    The embarrassing:
Getting slightly more intimate with my fixed partner (whom I’d never met before) than I’d meant to, when sweeping my hand up from hip height to hook under his arm for a lean and coming into contact with… Luckily he didn’t seem to mind – at all

    The bad:

Not alot - though I do wish I'd made the tango classes. And why can't they do something about the time differential at weekenders? Time always seems to pass so much faster than anywhere else!

Re: Ceroc Southport Scorch May 2009 Review / aftermath Thread

    The good:
*The weather - flippin amazing though so very very hot to dance, but we had fun on the beach and even took a swim
*The freestyling (though I admit I only made one visit to the main room to have some obligatory dances with folks from my local venues, though I also had fab dances with KPS, jive crazy and Jim(?) in there) the blues room was fabulous and I loved RevDrops sets as always (even if he did get cut short each time by the DJ schedule and then a power cut).
*The fact I felt like I'd had a whole weekend by the end of Saturday night so Sunday was like a whole bonus day.
*A fabulous massage from Nick (though I'm sorry I didn't catch you on the dance floor)
*The effort that went into organising the space hopper fun and the amusement as batman, bat girl and spiderman hopped across the quad - they must have been utterly roasting.
*Actually getting sleep and feeling quite alert throughout the night.
*Watching the classes on tv when we hadn't quite woken up in time for them
*So many good dances and fun comments about my dancing especially that I am apparently encouragable.. no idea what they mean

    The bad:
*I'll agree with Twirly we ended up missing / not finding the forum bbq as there was no focal point so we couldn't really see where to put stuff etc so hijacked the Nantwich/Shrewsbury/Stoke one instead. Also 1pm was a bit too early for me too. Twirly I'm glad you found a bbq, I did bring mine but yea didn't know who you were / where to leave it...
*Missing the giant space hopper race by seconds
*The power cuts (though the last dance one was also quite amusing and allowed us 4 bonus songs)
*Missing Wuzzle and Lost Leaders Sack the DJ sets, hopefully I will catch them next time x

    The other:
*Hardly doing any workshops, there are a few I would have liked to have gone to but were on at the same time / the sun and fun kept me away.
*Being amused that the gender balancing plan didn't account for half the women sunbathing rather than doing classes, never heard so many men being moved round.
*Buying my first proper dance dress (without guidance as they were about to close) but I think it will take a bottle of wine to have the confidence to wear it

Generally had a lovely weekend, seemed very different from the last time I went (in Sept which was my first weekender) but maybe thats because to me there was more of a focus on enjoying the sunshine and the social side than on classes. Was lovely to meet new and old forumites and see some faces I haven't seen since Skeggy, though I must say there was a fair few faces I missed esp Sara White and her crew. I also found I took very few photos (certainly in comparison to what I would normally take) but they are on facebook if anyone wants to nosey

And then some!! Sadly not quite the roasting Batman and Spiderman had in mind when they saw how sexy Batgirl looked

    Still, it wasn't all bad...

Re: Ceroc Southport Scorch May 2009 Review / aftermath Thread

...truely a wonderful weekend. Weather made it a perfect time to chill out, catch up with people and of course outside dancing, who could ask for more. My first Ceroc weekender and I wasn't dissappointed in the least. The numbers were certainly down on previous JA weekenders but that did not restrict my enjoyment in any way, in fact I still didn't have time to get round everyone I wanted to dance with.

A personal highlight for me was seeing so many of our local, less experienced dancers soaking up the whole experience, all that I spoke to having a fantastic weekend and commenting on the friendliness of everyone there. Not so sure that they would have felt so welcomed in the blues room at times in the past. Hope you all enjoyed popping your weekender cherries

Loved catching up with people I see way too seldom, Fletch (Joe's dancing is amazing - lovin' his style), Lory (hope you deleted the video), Trouble (you have a truely beautiful ring - and I never thought I'd be saying that to you), RubyRed (we never have enough time together), LimpTink (you make me feel so good - loved watching you and Robd doing yer WCS on Sunday - even managed to take my eyes off PaulW to watch you two), DTS (tagging ain't my thing but you make it fun).
Nice to meet new people as ever Scarface, Sunnybunny, Maxine and Batgirl all adding to the experience.

I spent time in all the rooms over the weekend and to all the DJ's there this weekend especially TB's Saturday WCS slot, Rocky's funky slot Sunday afternoon, ZW never a problem and of course Phyllis and her big Silver Box of loveliness.

Only down side was the existance of rude refusers. I find this particularily difficult as its really not someting I have experience or knowlege of in Scotland. I accept that people have every right to refuse a dance but when a man refuses to dance with a woman because he's on a break and then almost immediately dances with a younger slimmer model I find that unforgiveable. Do these idiots have any idea what they do to people's self confidence or is that perhaps the kick they get from it. If I am refused a dance I simply do not ask that person again but will wait to be asked - and I would accept, but for some people a refusal can ruin the whole weekend
I have thought about it since the weekend and have noticed that the refusers are not usually the best dancers - well at least outside their own heads. A certain Mr. Warden turned up on Sunday night and danced himself silly even accepting an invitation to dance with this mere jiver like me, and I believe that he is quite a good dancer - perhaps a lesson to be learnt there for some.

That aside, a fantastic time, well done to all who organised and ran the whole event [insert 5 star smilie].
