Crippled Ex-Dancer seeks new hobby - SUGGESTIONS????

Having danced for six years and won the Scottish Intermediates in 2008 I recently had an accident that will leave me very unlikely to Modern Jive again..

Can anyone suggest any replacement activities that will give me the same Buzz .......but without needing to move my right leg?

oh.. & also the same opportunity to wear tight sparkly shirts too!!

Sounds a bit defeatist to me. Perhaps you could be more specific than this....

Word to the wise, my friend...unless you are built like David Beckham (and gay) under no circumstances should you be wearing a sparkly shirt. Even a gammy leg wont let you get away with that one.

If you still want to be part of the MJ world, maybe you could get into DJing?

Or if not, is sky-diving within the realms of the possible? Could you even learn to fly a plane? (Don't know how much movement in the right leg is required for either of these things...)

I've seen folks dancing MJ in a wheel-chair mind, so an immovable right leg may not prevent you from dancing.

If you listen to DavidB, it might even be an advantage...

Cheshunt is the old ladies paradise with a few young ladeeeys chucked in.

Well thats me and Sis anyway.. not sure about Jay Jay, Sunnybunny and Maxine LOL

Sorry Billy Wizz, went off on a tangent there.

Good things to do with one leg.

Learn how to dance with one leg mate, its the only way - ive seen somebody dancing incredibly well with crutches..... (well its something to think about)

sorry to hear ya bad news also.

    Or even without crutches:

But if you want non-dance-related suggestions, perhaps you could explain what in particular you like about Modern Jive?

I am very sorry to hear that. I have had a couple of falls and near misses over the years and the thought that flashes through my mind on the way down is "will this end my dancing?"

David Plummer did a fun demo for MJ at a summer festival. "So easy a man can do it." He demo'ed this by standing on the spot and having the ladies do their thing around him and to him. Not in the same league as championship dancing, but to many men it looked like a good way to spend an evening. You could pass on your experience, even if you really cannot enjoy it any more.

Keep going mate. I used to dance 13 out of every 14 days, 4-5 hours some nights. I loved it and taught. I was then crushed in a car accident late 2002 by driver cutting a blind bend, speeding with a mobile to his ear. He walked away, I rush in an Ambulance to hospital. Legal actions still goes on his insurance company in 2009!!, he didnt care one bit!"! and he was fastracked through the courts, 7 points and £250 fine, I read it about it local newspaper as police didnt want me to know in case I put up objections!!. Me in and out hospital for years, loosing my job and home!! But you find out who your friends are and those who rip you off!!

Im a dj now, couldn't dance a step until 2007 through injuries and even now only last 2 mins an evening and those evenings can be months apart!! Just keep going as one day I will dance again!! For now Im on that journey and who knows for you!!

But watch out for dodgy steps down from the stage as sadly my own experience at Butlins Bognor in 2003, led to another awful accident which they were sued for as well as the organsior for leaving a hole in steps and having no lighting!!

You made need time but if you have it in you, which I hope you do, there is going to be something for you to do and enjoy!!

1 Tango if you still have enough movement
2 If you dont then take up swimming, it has been known for people who "will never walk again" use swimming to build back up and eventually can run a marathon, good luck and dont give up hope
3 Never ware a shirt like that again

I'm by no means an expert, but I think you need to push pedals to fly a plane (you use feet to work the rudder).
    Love dance, will travel

You do, but Sir Douglas Bader managed quite nicely with a pair of artificial pins...

Since he crashed when his legs were intact, and did not crash with his artificial ones, you could say he flew better.

He did indeed, although iirc he had to have alternative rudder controls rigged up so he didn't have to use his legs - prosthetics in the 1940s weren't great

The British Disabled Flying Association may be a good place to start if you do want to give it a go.

[nitpick mode]Actually, he did crash with his artificial ones on at least one occasion, and even got shot down, so that part's debateable...[/nitpick mode]

Back to the main topic for a moment, rather than suggesting any hobbies, may I instead offer the hope that Bill makes a full recovery, and is back on the dancefloor with his lovely wife before too long. The local scene would be by far the poorer without you both.

HaHa! You've been fingered by the accuracy police (which really isn't anything like as exciting as it sounds)

If they are anything like as on the mark as the G20 ones I have nothing to fear, being guilty.
