    Re: Swine flu outbreak

Thought C (My partner)had got it this weekend. Phone the NHS Direct who gave us the new national help line.

Anyway got me a special ref but none of the near by centres for Tami flu were open till monday. Im not sure if the flu takes the weekend off. ?

Anyway by sunday C better so no need for the shots.

God help us if this gets worse during the coming winter.

The 'back up' must work. Otherwise people will just take people to the local hospitals etc

According to the on-line assessment, I'm eligible for the antivirals and have been given an authorisation number. However, there appears to be no way of getting the drugs to people if they don't have a flu buddy, despite the pandemic website suggesting you get in touch with NHS direct. When you do that, they just ask if you have family, friends, neighbours or work colleagues who could collect for you; if you don't, then there isn't a way of getting it to you.

Turned out well then, because it's dangerous to take Tamiflu if you have not got Swine Flu.

The NHS employs administative people who the private sector don't want.

I hope you manage to get someone to fetch it for you.

...or better still you could be feeling better now like C.

I don't know how they think a computer programme can detect Swine Flu. The people operating the computers have no medical knowledge.

The NHS spend money training doctors, but we are not allowed to see any.

There is a notice on the door of my GP Surgery saying "don't come here if you think you might have Swine Flu."

No, it's not a great idea to spread Swine Flu by going to your doctor's surgery, where there are likely to be vulnerable people. But my doctor's practice is doing phone consultations, which worked well for me and didn't put anyone at risk. She told me about a mother who had a child with suspected Swine Flu, took them to the antiviral collection point, then had more questions so took them to the GP, via somewhere else and then was intending to take her child to McDonald's. That doesn't sound like a great idea, but then again, I only realised last night that something was wrong with me - and on reflection realised I'd had a fever for three days but just put it down to being summer and my feeling rough to having a really tough work schedule. If this is swine flu, then I've been unknowingly spreading it for three days.

It's as good as the person entering the information, like any computer!

When we were testing everyone for swine flu, only about 10% of people with symptoms were actually positive, so 90% had something else. Therefore the reports of 10,000 new cases of SF are almost certainly a gross over-estimate.

A friend who had it said she wasn't given anti-virals - she was told because had she already had the symptoms for two days, so clearly there is a lot of variation about who gets what and when.

    Hope you feel better soon.

See - a smurf can even hear a misplaced apostrophe across a crowded forum.
