A bottle of red wine normally does the trick !!!
During the week I’ll leave the venue around 11’ish, - but, even by the time I’ve driven home, cooked & eaten - my mind is still in overdrive. I’ll be going over all sorts of things that happened that night, the memorable dances I shared, who I danced with, what I learnt, what I need to improve upon, blardy blah - by the time I get to bed/sleep, its usually about 1am
Often, the better the night, the harder it is to get to shut off. I cant function properly without lots of sleep, it’s affecting my work, other hobbies, & of course my ability to dancing more often.
Is it just me with this problem? Any tips for calming my hyperactive mind and getting to sleep sooner?
A bottle of red wine normally does the trick !!!
It is an issue and having suffered from it before, I can tell you what works for me:
1. Don't eat that late - It is a fact that while your body is processing food it is difficult to sleep, and if you do manage it, you're likely to have nightmares or interrupted sleep.
2. Don't watch TV - Read a book instead, it's much more likely to help you unwind and send you to sleep.
3. Above all, don't spend too long worrying about not being able to sleep - If you really can't drop off, get up read a book/magazine, then go back to bed when you feel ready to try again.
Knock one out?
i've got enough bad habits U.P., don't need another one
Ah, - i've got to eat after ceroc, - I wont sleep otherwise! I'm a bit of an eating - calorie burning machine, - i'm quite active - usually eat around 5-6 times a day, so that's not an option, - but knowing myself, eating late doesnt stop me sleeping other nights.. - (I also have a big meal around 6pm after getting home from work), - after ceroc i'll just have a snack (last night was scrambled eggs on toast with a bit of bacon and a jumbo frankfurter with fresh orange juice
TV - ah - very good point, yeah, i usually watch tv, - then go to bed and read... - although when i'm watching tv i'm not actually concentrating, - my mind is still thinking about the night i've had. I'll cut that out for starters, Cheers Gav.
Rob - LOL - I thought someone might suggest something along those lines before I hit the submit button
My mind is usually awake longer than my eyes want to stay open so I shut them and listen to story tapes. My ears and brain are so used to this that the clicking off of the tape doesn't register if I am asleep.
Unfortunately dancing late in the evening is one of the
sleep hygiene don’ts
But do follow the rest of the advice
The only real solution is early retirement
If your work allows, try a siesta, but it needs to be part of your daily routine
I often have about an hour’s drive back from a dance venue so I find that by the time I get in the adrenaline is starting to subside.
I usually have a slice of toast when I get in as I never eat before dancing.
Then a warm bath helps me to relax an unwind
Like you I am rarely in bed before 1am after dancing
My final end to the eve is to recap the dances in my mind (like others count sheep) but don’t usually get even half way through the eve before I’m asleep
Can't really give you any advice on this one, as I have the ability to fall asleep inside 5 minutes, even on the back of a galloping hedgehog!
I think my ability to do that stems from habit. I tend to fall asleep in the same position, it's like it's muscle memory. As soon as I get into that position, my brain switches off and away I go to the land of nod!
Dancing is an "upper". Live with it.
Try writing down your thoughts until your mind feels clearer.
Well apart from the obvious stated above ...
My usual routine is a quick snack (yours sounds like a full meal to me!) - bit of toast or crispbreads with marmite (to get the salt I usually crave by then) whilst watching TV and having some camomile and peppermint tea (Sleepytime tea from Sainsbury's) and then a shower. The shower is really important as if I've been "glowing" rather a lot, I get all cold and clammy after dancing, and this helps clean up and warm up.
I take the dog out for his final 'wee' and have a little stroll. In the early hours of the mornng when I get home there is a lovely feel about the quietness of it all, especially if the evening has been a good'un. Then a horlicks and quick bit of a read in bed does the trick.
