I understand where you're coming from here, but to some extent, I disagree. I believe that (virtually) everyone has the capacity to become a decent dancer.

A lot of people simply don't believe they can do it.
A lot of people have mental blocks and fears which stop them progressing (you see this constantly watching things like Strictly or Faking It)
A lot of people just aren't prepared to put the work in to get good... (and for just about all of us, it does take a lot of work)
I'm sure there are many other reasons why people don't develop their dancing skills further than they do.

I believe, that with the right inspiration, teachers, resources and time, anyone could become a decent dancer.

    No.

I can take singing lessons for many years, due to natural tallent, I would never be a "good" singer.
I could very much enjoy singing, and have a lot of fun, but not be classed as "good".

Everyone has the potential to have a lot of fun dancing. Which is a great.

Can everyone enjoy dancing?, yes, can everyone be good at it?, no.

I know of someone who has gone to lessons and workshops for 20 years and is really keen on dance, he enjoys what he does, is he a good dancer? no, does it matter, no.

Im sorry, i thought we were remaking Little house on the prarie then for a second........which dancing is not and us dancers (me included) know a good dancer and a bad one. Does it matter, no because i like most others avoid them. They may wonder however why they get refused a lot and why nobody ever looks them in the eye. So does it matter, not to me but it may sort of hurt the other dancer when they suffer this treatment.

    Sad but true.

By the way, did i say, i think everybody i know is a fantastic dancer.!!!

I think "Jessica's" observations were very accurate, well certainly in the case of a couple of real life 10 year plus dancers I have in mind:

"On my list of signs that you can’t be a good dancer I’d include: lack of sensitivity to other people, inability to stop showing off, inability to connect emotionally/physically to music, and any arrogance that blocks the ability to learn."

Don't get me started. I'm filling up just thinking about poor Mary Ingles going blind.

Well, if they don't know any better, they might just think that's how all dancers are to everyone.

Nah, the people you are talking about are just happy to have some kind of physical contact with another human being. They've probably spent the lions share of their lives watching porn in their bedsit and w@nking themselves to death.

It's all relative...they may feel like John Travolta simply by being able to put one foot in front of the other and executing a half arsed arm jive.

If you have no sense of rythym and cannot hear the beat I really do think you could never be a good dancer.
I know we are really more concerned with MJ here but just lately I have watched a few muggles who have no sense of rythym and it does look dreadful. They just seem to hop from one foot to the other generally on the off beat.

So the question still stands, could you take someone like that, we all know one or two that come to mind from local venues, give them intensive one to one dance lessons, bags of confidence and turn them in to reasonably good dancers?

    no

Rhythm, like a singing voice, is something you either have, or you haven't got.

The good news is, that it CAN change, for some.
The bad news is, some have not seen that change yet, and maybe never will.

    On the CAN change side...

One top teacher/dancer I know, spent 6 months in beginners class until he could dance to the beat and get the moves.
Yes it took him 6 months and many private lessons, but he made it, and is now a "good" dancer. The big factor being he "knew" it was not time to move on until he got the basics.

One follow who was all over the place (politically correct speak) for many years, has now turned the corner. . It took over 7 years, she is now on the beat and a pleasure to dance with.

I would certainly like to try.

It might or might not happen.

For some it will not happen.

Therefore NO is the answer to the catch all.

Yes is the answer to one or two who might get it.

    A recent example:
A friend of mine, been dancing for just 1 year, very keen, but off beat etc. I have done one to one coaching, he has got better, but still slips off beat and cannot hear it. I will keep encoraging and helping him. Will he become a good dancer? Not sure. Thing is, he is having a lot more fun with his dancing.

In that case you have blown my opinion straight out of the water.

Yes. If you haven't got rhythm, as we've now established, you can learn it.

[quote=djtrev;541723]If you have no sense of rhythm and cannot hear the beat I really do think you could never be a good dancer...[quote]

I agree. Some people who 'struggle' with hearing the beat can really improve and learn to pick it up, and some people realise they have trouble and pick up the beat from their partner's movements.

But there are some folks who truly have absolutely no ability to 'understand' or perceive rhythm at all (although I think it's quite rare, like those who are truly tone deaf).

There are even some people (this is very rare) who can not perceive music at all - to them music sounds the same as any random collection of tones. They can not hear any difference between the sound of music and the sound of random 'noise' made by instruments. Whatever part of our brain recognises and understands musical harmony is not working for these people.

As far as I'm concerned, yes, with some provisos. The student needs to be prepared to work for it - capable isn't the same thing as willing. And the teacher needs to take the right approach for the student - some people are easier to teach than others. But a yes from me nonetheless.

Some can, maybe, but not anybody, which if you look at the thread title was the original question.

so, just to re-cap, that makes me right (again) and you wrong.

If they are able to repeatedly hop on the off beat, then they have rhythm
