I would recommend you check out at least the Manly and Willoughby venues. There are dance parties on the 4th and 18th of April.
On the 1st April I will be flying out to spend a month in Sydney Oz. I have been informed that there are a few Aussie on here that might be able to help me. I really fancy going along and seeing how the Aussie Ceroc in Sydney. I’ll be staying with my brother in a place called Manly and was wondering what is the best venue to try and make it too while I’m out there. I have been on the ceroc Oz website and I saw there is also a venue in Manly, can anyone give me any feedback as I will probably try and make it along to this one if it is nearby. Also does anyone know if there is freestyle on during April in Sydney. Thank in advance
kps

Have a great time

I was out there earlier this year, I went to the Canada Bay Club venue in Five Dock Sydney which is the opposite side to Manly, it was a good class. Their footwork style is slightly different, I found I felt like I was marching rather than dancing some of the time, they do some complex moves (compared to your average venue here) but nothing an intermediate shouldn't be able to manage. They will find it interesting dancing with you as they do some of the moves in reverse like the octopus (man goes under first rather than lady) and so on (must be something to do with being upside down like the water going down the sink the other way). If you do go there, be warned it's a private members club so take some id as you will have to sign in, their website mentions nothing of this. They don't seem to be as into freestyle as we are over here but they do happen, there are also dance camps a bit like Southport sometimes but I never made it to one of those.
Hiya
I was out there the last few weeks - and only managed to get to Willloughby (on a week day) due to other commitments. People are very friendly and helpful.Willoughby itself is out of the way a bit - nearest tube station was Artamon(sp?) and then it was 10+ mins taxi from there. Fortunately, Kim(?) the DJ provided a lift back to the station - it's out in the 'burbs a bit.
The other rec. I had from Martin was to go to Ashfield on Thursdays - a bit easier to get to on the tube.
The freestyles seem a bit less frequent than in the UK - maybe that was cos it was just after a big weekender....
UK: 'Freestyle' = Oz: Dance Party.
think you will find that bus is a better option to get to Willoughby venue - as I recall it dropped us off only a couple of minutes walk...
Hmmm. Just to clarify things a bit.....
There are 2 main dance companies in Sydney. Ceroc Australia and Ceroc and Modern Jive.
Gary works for CMJ, who have dance classes in Manly League club, which isn't really in Manly itself, but in Manly Vale (covers a wider area than just Manly itself), much nearer to Dee Why (which is where I live!) on a Wednesday, and Willougby on a Thursday.
Jive Lad went to the CA venue in Willougby on a Tuesday! I teach for CA, and I'm usually at the Tuesday night class, unless I'm teaching somewhere else that week (as I was the week that Jive Lad was there).
If you don't have a car, then getting to any of the venues from Manly is a bit of a pain, although there is a bus that goes from Manly to Chatswood (the 136), and you can get to either of the Willoughby venues from that.
You can have a look at both of the websites....
CerocAustralia.com.au
Ceroc.com.au
And if you want any further details, drop me a PM, and I'll do my best to help.
I am also in Sydney from 4th April till the 9th. Will definitely be heading for the Willoughby dance party on 4th...
Don't think I've met you kps as left London for singapore last April...
(anyone want to give kps a dance character ref for me ?)
Any aussies on here, do please ask me for a dance. I am desperate as singapore is a ceroc/MJ/WCS dance desert and although I have flown back to the UK twice solely to dance, my addiction desperately needs feeding !!!!
Foxy
(not a redhead - but more a description of my dance style.....)
Hi Foxy, I don't think I had the pleasure of meeting you before you left for Singapore, apart from the lack of dancing I bet its been amazing.
I'm not so sure that I will be able to make the 4th, but I will try my best to make it... it all depends on what my brother has planned and how far away from his the venue is.
Im not so sure thats a great advert for me.
Oh dear
There is MJ dancing somewhere in Sydney every night of the week.
You're staying in Manly -- so the government assumes you have a car.
You can go to the Manly (CMJ; Brookvale) (just up the road, there's a bus every few minutes), on Wednesday nights, or you can try Willoughby on Tuesday (CA) or Thursday (CMJ).
I have no idea how to get from Manly to Willoughby by public transport (must be one or more buses), and it's not something I would like to try.
Freestyle (does this have the same meaning across hemispheres?): there is at least one party almost every Saturday.
CMJ: 4 Apr at Willoughby, 18 Apr at Concord.
CA: 4 Apr at Heathcote (not really Sydney), 11 Apr at Botany (can your brother drive you, it's worth going to but not by public transport from Manly), 18 Apr at Chatswood (almost the same as Willoughby).
There is also a pure social night at Burwood (Bath Arms Hotel, cnr Burwood Rd and Parramatta Rd) every Friday night. Generally a rough pub (order beer not wine, unless you want to wait 15 min while the waitress goes to find [maybe buy] a bottle of wine). Do not arrive before 20:30 (and don't expect any good dancers before 21:00 [honestly, don't expect anything. this is a new venue, and often the patrons are couples not interested in socialising {I am guilty}]). Not easy to get to from Manly by public transport. Probably impossible to get home from by public transport after 22:00.
Hi Tim, how easy will it be on the saturday night to get from Willoughby to the centre of Sydney ? Are taxis readily available, or what options are there on public transport ?
Or are there any kind souls out there who could give me a lift back ?
Foxy
Unfortunately, it's hard for me to answer. As a local, I gave up on buses, trains and taxis years ago.
However, getting to the centre of Sydney is fairly easy -- all public transport assumes you want to go into Sydney.
The Saturday Willoughby venue is right on one of the main routes into the city, so taxis should not be a problem.
Where are you staying? If you're close to a train line, I could arrange to meet you at Artarmon station and take you to the CMJ party. (I'm not promising a lift home [across the harbour? tell her she's dreamin'].)
I do relish my bit of rough now and again
Seriously, only in town for 5 days so didn't want to waste time travelling all over, and got air tickets for free and someone pointed me at Wotif.com, so got a good deal on hotel !!! That said, in order to dance I have to travel all over !!!!

Well, for dancing, I'm at Canada Bay on 2 Apr; I might go to Burwood on 3 Apr; I will definitely (unless my mother dies) be at Willoughby on 4 Apr (and I will be looking for hot foreign chick).
On Sunday I'll rest from dancing.
For Mon 6 Apr if and where I dance will depend on which girls are where.
