As I watch the window cleaners on a gantry outside our 5th floor windows and they reach at full stretch over the side of the gantry to clean the windows, I can't help noticing that they're wearing full harnesses, but they're not connected to anything.
Clearly they didn't read this in the papers this morning.
It all sounds daft when you read it or hear about incidents like that but we all do jobs where we choose a method in the knowlege that there is a safer way to do the same job. The safer method generally involves a greater number of steps or more equipment so we can justify doing the job 'our' way because of cost or time constraints.
Basically we are all stupid.
I've strimmed grass wearing sandals before.
Overstretched whilst up a ladder.
Re-wired switches live.
but i have got away with it so far
The list of possible fcuk ups we skirt with through our daily life is never ending.
I think I may have said this before in here but the philosophy toward 'Safety' when I worked on Terminal 5 was 'Think what if? Not if only!'
It is simple yet if you do think it, it may be enough to spur you to taking the slightly more tortuous yet much safer route.
Credit and long life to the bloke who connected up his harness though!
I don't know why people are so reluctant to wear harnesses
I have two dead friends who would be alive today, had they worn one
another friend was in intensive care for over a year, because he was not wearing a harness
I used to be an inspector for commercial balloon pilots
the most common failure was failing to wear a harness
