I am 90% sure, even from this distance, that the type of floor varnish is your problem.

The common types of floor varnish are based on either water or polyurethane. Polyurethane whiffs a bit when it is applied so venues often use water based varnish.

Water based varnish is a problem in a dance hall because the grinding action of the shoes on the floor slowly but surely produces a dusty substance and lots of it. It looks like everyone has put chalk dust on their shoes and stampeded across the adjacent carpets.

Switching to a polyurethane based varnish is probably the answer for your venue.

Hope I'm right and your venue manager accepts it as the reason. If they don't, try going onto the floor by yourself at the start of the evening and doing a few spins. Then step onto a carpet. Even before the crowd has made loads of dust you may well find that your talc-free shoes have magically acquired a dusty coating.

Thanks, I'll try that. Was pretty much convinced myself that it wasn't talc but needed the ammo before i launch a counter-attack!
