101 things to do before you die – but you just can’t be arsed

After being dispatched on a shopping trip to buy a 50th birthday present for a guy (buying a birthday present for males is enough to make my heart sink) decided to head for my easy get out – the book shop. Anyway found this book with a similar title to the thread and it got me thinking of the dreams and aspirations I have had and just can’t be arsed to fulfil:

    1. Learn to play a musical instrument. We have had a guitar in our house for over 20 years and I still can’t play a chord
    2. Learn to speak a foreign language fluently, I can speak bits of French, Spanish and Hebrew (can even read and write Hebrew) but not enough to converse with anyone in those languages am always envious of those who can suddenly switch form one language to another, just not envious enough to do anything about it
    3. Finish my Psychology degree that has been on hold now for about 4 years. Have done 4 years of what was a 6 year course, now 7 because OU have added another course but just can’t get motivated enough to get signed back on and start studying again.

Please let me know if there are other apathy bound people there or if you are totally opposite and are working through you to do list nicely and efficiently, whilst calculating your life expectancy. I need support in this or I may need counselling and quite frankly I can’t be arsed to seek therapy

Maybe it isn't apathy Maxine but just life keeping you occupied in other areas, for example having and bringing up our families, getting on with our careers and fullfilling the other things on our to do list. You can sometimes only do what you can do, and if you look at what you have achieved I am sure there has been loads.

I have always wanted to learn the piano, had one in the house until about a couple of years ago, both the children learnt how to play, and I ......polished it with Mr Sheen! but I bought music to listen to which gave me lots of pleasure. Wanted to learn a language and went to night school to learn Italian, but then developed other hobbies like dancing, so apart from putting a CD in the car and listening to it whilst driving, when would I have the time? I have tried to find a Spanish night school class, but they are all exam based, and I don't want to do any more study in my life. Wanted to learn golf, and not really giving up on that one yet ,but when I get around to it hey!! Still want to do a parachute jump, still want to go to Russia, see the Great Wall of China, explore Israel, [have been to Jerusalem and Bethlehem], still want to get better at tango, still want still want............will keep on trying until life gives me a window. I don't think its all to do with apathy, because if we really want to do something we will make the time for it,to which I am sure you have in particular with your dancing for example. I think its more about making time and fitting everything into our already really busy, and dare I admit, otherwise fun filled lives.

p.s being the nosey crow that I am what present did you buy?

Funny when edited this post I just noticed my signiture!!

    What's wrong with you?

    Men are simple.

Ergo, buying presents for men is simple.

    Buy:
    a. Pocket knife, pen knife, multi-tool type Swiss army knife.
    b. Torch. Nice aluminum L.E.D. sort.
    c. Anything with a three pin mains plug on it.
    d. A snazzy lighter (preferably one that you fiddle about putting petrol in).
    e. Anything from the Gadget Shop.
    f. Dutch pornography.

Most blokes are happy with any of the above. I can explain the psychology of these gifts to you, but like men, it's fairly simple to work out.

I must have a real problem, if it is nothing to do with dancing, clothes or eating I can't even be arsed to even think about it

I should probably reply to this thread before I die, but I can't be arsed.

How did the expression 'Can't be arsed' come about anyway? It doesn't make sense

Could it have been 'I can't be asked', meaning I can't be made to do something. If I could be @rsed I would look it up.

Well it was bugging me so much that I was arsed to delve a little and this is what I came up with :-

'I can't be arsed' is the usual expression. It appears to be relatively recent. When I was a young person in Ireland the expression there was 'I wouldn't bother me arse', which meant that you felt it was too much trouble to rise from a seated position to attend to the matter. Probably the current expression develops from some such idea. It is odd, though, because as far as I am aware, there are no other expressions where 'arse' is used as a verb in this sense. 'Arsing about' is a completely different matter.

So there you go.....I have now done my bit and getting on with dancing, eating and clothes shopping for which I can always be arsed

Yep that about explains my usual thought pattern at home, such as take the day off work to do a spring clean of the house (well can’t waste my weekends doing such mundane matters) but first I’ll log on the computer with a cup of tea get involved in something on the computer and then think about doing the cleaning and then think you know what I can’t be asked to do it now I think I stay here and listen to some music log on the forum. Is there an apathy medal anywhere please?

But mention dancing (or firemen) and I’m a different person

Really??? I find a tad hard to buy gifts for any male, women seem much easier. So far i've been doing ok with the gifts for my man. I wouldn't buy him Dutch pornography and the Gadget Shop near me closed down a while ago. But there is a new store all do with male gifts.

The best solution for buying gifts for men is take them shopping with you and they can choose their present plus also give them a suprise
