It all boils down to a couple of things for me...

    Dancers, floors, music and venues.

    Yes, totally agree.

The music and the dancing was fabulous. I pretty much stayed in the blues room the entire time and found the music was diverse, funky, and great to dance to. Yes there was a lot of WCS-able music, but it was also blues-able.

Took 10 mins to get from chalet to venues (I think I was as far away as anyone) which was fine. Generally takes about that for me at Pontins as I was always getting lost, which didn't happen at skeg.

Re: floors. I hear in Buenos Aires they dance in the squares and cafes. They weren't perfect, so what? Could still dance in them and have a lot of fun. I dind't actually go in the main rooms at all (except for the classes) but the other 2 venues were great.

I think a lot of people started out thinking negatively about the venue from the outset when they got there and saw the layout wasn't a carbon copy of Southport, which impacted their enjoyment. At the end of the day, it was a lot of the same dancers and DJ's as before and that's the main thing (for me, anyway).

John was going round actively seeking feedback so that he could make changes for June - such as an outdoor space they hope to erect for then, as well as more WCS and tango sets in a 4th room like at Southport.

There are always going to be teething problems when you start something new but I think that Skeg was fantastic and am really excited about the next one.

    I x

PS the 2nd and 3rd tango classes were much better.

    Re: Skeggy - The Aftermath

Thank you for all the reviews - very interesting reading in terms of deciding whether/when to go myself. It sounds as if it's an event with a lot of promise

what ever happend to male lead female follow....guys give it a go if we mess up then adjust you dancing acordingly....if your as good as the impression you give i'm sure you will cope....and what's the worst that can happen? you don't get the wow dance you think you deserve. You have the power to make or brake some ones weekend.

Am going to have to disagree with you on this one Fletch... I don't WCS at all. I'd be mortified if someone asked me to dance at a jive event, and then just assumed that I could WCS just because of the room I was in/the music that was playing unless it was a specific WCS session (in which case if I got asked whilst just watching it would be up to me to say I couldn't do it). I would much rather be asked and given the option to WCS or jive.

In fact, it is one of the off-putting things for some of us who don't WCS (and have no desire to either - have tried several of the beginners classes at weekenders and just didn't get on with it) at events where there are lots of experienced dancers. I will always do my best to follow what's lead, but I don't know the footwork, it's really embarrassing, and I end up feeling awkward as if I have two left feet. And that can seriously damage my confidence and throw my evening off.

So guys, if you don't know for certain, please don't assume and do ask!

This thread has so whetted my appetite for June...I am really excited now, have never done a JA/Southport and this year was going to be my first, typical!

It will be interesting because I have no preconceived ideas so Skeggy here I come and I think with nice weather and all the little kinks ironed out it should be a good one.

    Re: Skeggy - The Aftermath

Accommodation = no complaints and I was only 5 minutes away from the dancing. Shame half the people I knew were 10 minutes in the other direction as this restricted the chance to socialise when resting. Would be great if we could all be in same area of the site. Never heard any of the kids all weekend.

Dance venues - All well air conditioned even Reds which was the hottest was a lot cooler than most freestyle venues. Floor was a problem in Reds but can be fixed. JAKS was great...floor was fast but fantastic...there was a residue but get the feeling it was the varnish coming off the floor or the cleaner being used and needs investigation. All issues I see as teething.
Pushing the seating back in JAKS made all the difference to the atmosphere...good move!
Blue overshoes worked for me and distance not a problem.
Somehow need to allow a communal area on arrival so people can catch up...move the check in to JAKS or allow us to socialise in Arthurs rather than just check in?
Make sure the water is replemished please - no water in Arthurs was a real issue!

    Music and atmospehre.
Spent most of my time in JAKS

    Friday night -
bland, bland, bland...it wasn't WCS it was just dull, dull, dull and I think (sure I'll be corrected if I've misunderstood!) Blues and WCS dancers had equal issue with the selection of music on Friday. It felt as though the DJs had tried to think what everyone would like and just alienated everyone (not all time but most of the time).

    Rest of weekend -
WOW! Mix of sets much more in keeping with the variety we would have had at the old Southport.
Three sets stood out for me and that was Dance Demon, Sheepman and Peter Flood. They played an interesting variety of old favorites and tracks you could lose yourself in. AND YES I KNOW Peter is a WCS DJ but I think because of this he was able to select the cream of the WCS songs that blues dancers also enjoy.
Monday morning Roger Chin played a good set suited to a chilled out normal dance night but I had understood that one reason to give have a WCS focused room was so both styles could dance to the songs that the other style is just not suited to. Unfortunately Rogers set was so far from the expected blues music room I was expecting I felt cheated... The concept of some time apart is good BUT it is possible for both styles to be in the same space with careful thought and adjustment of the DJs.

    Teachers - Tango
I only did 2 Tango classes. I spoke to the teachers after the second one as having just done a 3 week tango course I can see why people would have been disappointed. Not sure what brief they had been given but it was clear they were not expecting what they got....HUGE classes and VERY MIXED abilities and I felt really sorry for them. They had understood beginner, intermediate and advanced...but there was no guide in the program. I know these guys are well respected in the Tango world and they did an excellent job in the second class when they realised they had mixed abilities of adapting as best they could. If given the chance to visit again I think they would cope very well. Very frustrated that the Milonga time clashed with the Cabaret which meant they couldn't dance socially and inspire us - and being told they were extending the Milonga by half an hour but nobody telling the DJ (ouch)!

    Overall
Slow start Friday...by end of the weekend...Fantastic...loved it!
I had already booked June (as a lady you can't hang about) and based on what I saw booked September Monday morning. The issues are teething problems that I know John and Wes can resolve. Well done on the first event - I'm hooked!

Good move by (I think) Lee Bartholomew to move the tables/chairs in Jaks to create an extra bit of space (originally for private lessons but was left for the freestyle)
Actually it you are talking about the bit done on the raised bit directly across the dance floor from the door – this was done by Jon on Sunday after the final class finished– purely to make more space

To use your own line fletch, 'what a load of tosh'

I don't ask 'do you WCS' and at a MJ weekender I will always default to dancing MJ unless I know the follower I am dancing with does dance WCS. However I don't blame others for asking the question. You cannot simply make someone dance WCS through good lead & follow - there are conventions within the dance in terms of timing and so on that both partners need to be aware of.

    Re: Skeggy - The Aftermath

(not particular re-read thru this so most probably contains loads of errors, tho I don’t care, haha)

Firstly to Mr/Mrs/Miss/Ms/Master/Dr/Rev/Twonk Anon, GROW SOME B0LL0CKS! They make you more manly so I’m told.

    Right then…

    Journey

Not to Bad. Just foller’d some women in a box for nearly 4 hours. Then foller’d a poxy 2mph lorry for 30+miles. Grrrr…

    Accommodation
    • Cleanliness
    I. It lacked dodgy blood stain and iron carpet burns but that took away the guessing game of what really caused that brown skid mark…
    • Hot water
Enventually when I worked out that I had to put the shower on virtually max. Never used the kettle. Alcohol served me good all weekend it did.
    • Cooking facilities
I was half bored, though only ate once due to being asle…erm…resting my eyes during the day. Never used the cooking facilities in me room.
    • Distance from your accommodation to the venue?
5 mins. The very far end wasn’t that far and if it took longer than say 15 mins max, I’d suggest walking lessons. Trying the Tango class.

    Venues
    • Distance between venues and was this an issue?
Nope. I have a lovely pair of leather sole shoes that I can wear outside, walk in as many puddles as I like then walk in a venue and dance straight away in ‘em. Also beer coats keep you warm .
    • Timings of available dancing
I went out much later that usual this time. Was a bit tait’er’d as wasn’t feeling 100%, maybe 95% or so, mostly from not eating properly. But I kept wishing I just went in say Eds (see next paragraph) early and saw the muggle entertainment. Not been Butlins for a few years so it would have brough back memories.
    • Size
Eds (the “R” neon light hadn’t paid its lecky meter) – Good size tho the only consistant-ish bit of floor was the white section at the end. I found that section of flooring to be perfek in thee end. Bit to slippy to spin but that’s ok.
Arther’s – Seen many similar venues in the NW. Not good if you want to park you’re stuff and you’re behind somewhere but if you travel accessory naked like me, it’s no problem

Jaks – Erm bigger than SP just, tho with the Swingy dancers in there, a football pitch wouldn’t ave ‘acked it.
    • Floor
Eds – Good on the white bit. Uneven;y balance on the rest. Tho the bit of grey stuff as you walked in was the best floored I’d danced on all weekend. Shame it was like sandpaper, tho with my holy shoes, that didn’t mater to me.
    Arther’s – I LIKE STICKY/GRIPPY-ISH FLOORS. WOOOOO!

Jak’s – F*cking sh1t! Just needed Todd Carty on it then it would have been complete!!!
    • Heat - fans - air-con etc
Eds – Lovely hot air-con to make you sweat like a pig. I really should have stopped standing directly underneath it.
    Arthers – Fine.

Jaks – Never in there long enough to have known.
    • Bars - efficiency and prices
£2.75 for a pint of Tetleys meaning I had to carry 5p’s. I don’t do things less than 10p . Auther’s was a no no. Ain’t paying for bottles that get chucked away. Don’t be silly.
    • Seating
    Ed’s – Enough.
Arther’s – Not enough tho it don’t bovver me at all.

Jaks – nice bit of seating around the dancefloor to watch. Least I liked that bit about that room.
    • Atmosphere?
Ed’s – Liked it myself. Like it a lot!
Arther’s – Alright when a Tango session or Eds weren’t on.
Jaks – Like standing in a lift.

    Restaurants
    • Quality
Good tho only ate once even tho I was half board. Shame on me.
    • Prices
    Didn’t pay.
    • efficiency
    Flippin good!

    Other facilities
    • spa
    N/A unfortunately. Maybe next time.
    • swimming
Can’t swim. Can someone teach me??!
    • Shops
F*cking con artists. The price on what I thought was 4 cans of bitter was actually the price of one. Why not then put them singularly on the counter.
    • Bars
    Wasn’t that above somewhere.

the good the bad and the Ugly of the...

Me postage stamp dancing (well sort off, ok I’m not the best) then some random tw*t bangs into me while I’m stood stationery as I seemed to be taking up the last 2 ft of his 20ft swingy slot. Tschhh! Then hearing some other tw*t walk onto the dance floor then abandening a partner str8 away cus they didn’t do swingy stuff. Seems to be a theme as to who a tw*t is here. Tho I must say, I’m becoming a Swingy twa’t myself slowly. Quite like the dance, just not the cr@p that comes with it.

    Music - Dj's

Eds – loved the music around 3-5am. Fab stuff.

Auther’s – Not really into Latin. Nor Tango (the drink is nice tho). Never have been.

Jak’s – IF I WANTED TO LISTEN TO MUSAC, IF WOULD HAVE STOOD IN A LIFT OR SUMMAT.

OH AND FOR THE RECORD, DJ’S, STOP PLAYING BL00DY “MERCY”. IT IS THE CRA@PPIEST SONG IN ALL EXISTANCE. STOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOPPPPPPPPP IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIITTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT TTTT NNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWW!

    Workshops

Only did the 2nd & 3rd WCS classes. Twer good! Just watched the dips & drops as it looked like far too much effort!!!

    Cabarets

Liked the 2nd Tango and the correographed WCS.

    and any other incidentals.

    Yes, but don’t be nosey.

    Forum meets etc

Was there one that I missed again???

Would a BBQ be feasible for the summer?

Maybe, maybe not. Anyone got a weather report yet!

    Any complaints?

    Floors…………….. ¬_¬

Any surprise.... 'Wow..... that was a brilliant innovation'?

    Err…

    What could be improved on?

    Floors…………….. ¬_¬

    Any Shocking gossip???

    Probably…

Lovey dovy news, Valentine proposals etc?

Felt lonely, especially on Sunday. Missed a certain someone .

and finally ... compared to the previous JA Southport's, how does it rate, as an overall experience???

A good weekender. Comparing to SP would be pathetic and a waste of time. This is a new event as far as I’m concerned.

    P.s. I missed you all!

    I missed a certain someone…

    Re: Skeggy - The Aftermath

Thanks to those posting reviews. I'd been getting my own via phone calls on Sat and Sun and will hear more tonight. Also like looking at people's pics on FB - so am picking up on the vibe and general feelings of the event.

The JA Southport era ended in Sep. Eclipse will not be the same and neither will Blush. They are both new events, different events and people have to come to them fresh and enjoy them for what they are.

I had already booked for Eclipse June before I knew I couldn't come this time, but based on the phone conversations over the past weekend have booked for Sep as well.

I know it sounds like there were some teething troubles - but I was at every single JA Southport and there were things people weren't happy about at those events as they developed - things that were sorted, improved on etc - this is how new ideas and improvements come about and I've noticed that J&W really listen to feedback and work to make changes.

Looking forward to seeing it all in June.

Missed being there and seeing everyone - will have a good few dances to catch up with in June!

    Re: Skeggy - The Aftermath

Journey - Travelled up in two cars, good company and music - took slightly longer than to get to SP (6ish hrs I think) but we stopped about 3 times on the way there and twice on the way home. We were stuck in a slow moving queue on the way there and had some random diversion through farmland on the way home, but the anticipation of getting there and the buzz on the way home made it bearable.

    Accommodation

    * Cleanliness Wow, I loved the apartments - we had two 3 bedroom apartments next door to each other. The lovely spacious lounge/kitchen area was great for meal times and drinkies before heading out. Plus the patio doored area looks like it might be great for socialising/bbqs in the summer if a lot of dancers were in the same area this time.

    * Hot water This was great - the only slight problem was that we didn't have a shower hose initially but this was sorted out in about an hr and a half after a text. It just meant more time for drinking and chatting before showering to go out.

    * Cooking facilities So much better than what we were used to at SP although once again we took far too much food. I really need to get better at stopping dancing and going to eat. I seem to lose my appetite at dancing and other than pizza when we arrived and breakfast on Sat I seemed to survive on minimal snacks and alcohol....that surely can't be good for me haha.

    * Distance from your accommodation to the venue? It seemed like we were in the furthest block from the venues but it was only a 15 min stroll or 10 min brisk walk. I had to be walked home the first night (cheers Spice n Easy ) as I was the last of our gang to go but once someone pointed out to me you just follow the path until you get to the pink apartments I was fine I felt safe wandering around at all hours but it did seem strange to have non-dancers around but it didn't cause me any problems.

I seemed to go past a Red Coat or other Butlins worker on every trip though and always got a nice smile and greeting from them which was nice.

    Venues

    * Distance between venues and was this an issue? Distance wasn't an issue. I used to love flitting easily between the main and blues room at SP but I didn't miss this as much as I thought I would. I just got my main room fix until about I heard too many tracks I wasn't so keen to dance to then went to finish off my dancing in Jaks. If anything it allowed me to get properly into my mainroom/funky zone and then my blues/funky/smoochy zone. The security staff on the doors seemed very friendly - and quite interested in what was going on in the Blues room haha, I wouldn't be surprised if a few of them took up dancing.

    * Timings of available dancing The only thing that bothered me was that the first night we went out as a group for the 11:30 class in Arthurs on Friday - it looked pretty in there but I didn't want to do the class so was sat watching and waiting for it to finish so we could go and dance in Reds for the first part of the evening. I didn't really enjoy the music in Arthurs immediately before or after (I wasn't in there for the rest of the weekend though so can't comment). Latin just doesn't really do it for me.

    * Size

Arthurs - seemed to have a good sized dance floor for the size of the venue but it was tricky to walk around the edges and find places to dump stuff.

Red - really funky venue, seemed to have a constant party atmosphere which I loved. I found the white tiled area to be the best of the floor in there for dancing and had most of my dances on it. I heard a lot of great fast, fun, funky tunes and loads of great partners to dance to on it - one forumite that was pointed out to me was The Librarian and we had some fab dances - lovely to meet you and hope for more

Jaks - I loved this venue and spent most of Sunday daytime in there. Saturday night was good but Sunday daytime and Sunday from 4.30ish until they switched the music off was amazing whoever the DJs were at those times, thank you!

    * Floor

Reds - white tiled area was the best for me, although I did find a few ridges and it was stickier in some areas. The black and white tiles were more of a problem for dancing but it was manageable if you were dancing with a partner who understood the floor issues.

Jaks - the floor was fine for me on Sat and Sun but I found it really scary on Friday and couldn't dance on it at all. I only had three songs in there on the Friday night as the floor seemed to be covered in something like sand. I missed by Blues room fix on Friday but went back to Jaks and had some more fun upbeat dances instead.

    * Heat - fans - air-con etc The temperature in Jaks seemed fine to me. In Reds it was uncomfortably hot underneath the heaters over the tables (why they were on I don't know ) but I was only ever under them briefly to grab something from my bag so it was okay. The temperature seemed okay to me on the dance floor.

    * Bars - efficiency and prices
Didn't buy a lot there (most of my drinking was done in the chalet) but the bar staff seemed friendly. Free water seemed plentiful to me in both Reds (once my mate pointed out there were jugs of water once the coolers had run out) and Jaks.

    * Seating Other than the problem with the heaters over some of the tables in Reds I found the seating to be fine in both Reds and Jaks.

    * Atmosphere I love the fact that there was a real party atmosphere in Reds I also loved the friendly, chilled out atmosphere in Jaks on Sunday daytime - that, and the music, meant I stayed so much later than I meant to but had a blast.

Didn't go there but hope to try it in June - how busy was it?

Workshops I only did the first two WCS classes and thoroughly enjoyed them. I loved Kyle and Sarah and thought their control of the classes and the tips they were giving were great. The lines were shorter in Reds for the workshops. Luckily in my line each time there were a few good WCS leads but I think some people may have struggled only rotating in their line if all the leads were complete beginners.

Cabarets Although I have loved other AT cabarets I have seen I didn't particularly enjoy these, especially the one that was to very loud, harsh on the ears music. Respect to those that got up on stage for the Showgirls cabaret. I loved Kyle and Sarah's routine - particulary the second one - amazing!

Overall I had a blast - Friday didn't quite work for me but that was due to a personal issue affecting my confidence (but I sorted that one out on Saturday) and having drunk more than I would normally when dancing and the floor in Jaks being too scary for me to dance on. From Saturday onwards though I found my weekender high and am still buzzing now. I booked up for June and September months ago and can't wait to go back, especially as I'm sure (as has been the case with previous SPs) any little niggles will have been improved upon by then.

Thanks to everyone for a great weekend.

So guys, if you don't know for certain, please don't assume and do ask!
Sorry I am with Fletch on this one.

If the lead takes you on the floor and just starts dancing with you they will be able to tell within a few moments if you can WCS. They could then adapt the dance to suit. That is assuming of course that they are a good lead.

Leaving someone standing alone on the floor, saying 'this is not working, is it' and generally being rude and insensitive are not signs of a good lead.

    Still buzzing!

Loved Jaks - my kinda place.

Nice spring floor, raised area for watching.

Dare I say it - Music brilliant, didn't hear the same track twice.

Cake every night by Lemon Cake and Cheeky Monkey.

Plus Rythmn King's birthday cake on Friday night.

Everything on one level, no steps anywhere DB, except up to Reds, but there is a good lift.

Clean spacious toilets at every venue (didn't check out the ones at Arthurs)

I was lucky, only 3 minutes walk from my accomaodation which was really warm and clean. Microwave in kitchen.

Lovely sandy beach. Had a stroll along it on Valentine's day - with a man....

There were 2 places selling Costa Coffee.

I can recommend Finnegans Fish and Chips. I had cod and chips twice. Very tasty.

Thanks to Tessalicious for getting me 'in chains' with Blueshoes.

Thanks to Lee for the lift to the station, and more importantly, the dances.

Thanks Double trouble and Trouble for the photos on Facebook.

    Re: Skeggy - The Aftermath

I wrote a review and posted it and it hasn't appeared... Dunno why, so I'll just say it was a good weekend, loved seeing people and generally had a good time.

Lotsa dance snobs around aren't there... Seriously... some people need their heads checking... look at yourself and reaise you're actually not that good yeah?

Does make me giggle when you see them all looking down at the dancefloor... Oh no dear I couldn't possibly dance with you, you're a level 2 and I'm a level 3 with cubans No dear you've not ascended to my level yet... Oh buggar off.

    Missed you too Lory

Good weekend overall. I found the main room the most fun, blues room was a nice room but too many titheads and the other room was a bit weird. DJs were a bit rubbish at times... Too much old crappy music, like actual plain crap music, lot's of RnB in the blues room which I found a little annoying because it became like a salsa club where all the music sounds the same.

Yeah, good weekend. I liked the accomodation, much better than pontins. Staff are friendlier too.

    Good times

I would love to know who these dance snobs actually are. I dance WCS and Jive and anything else anyone wishes to try on me. I had a Cha Cha and some other sort of ballroom dance (but I haven't the foggiest what it was!) Oh and Jamie and I had our own version of Tango we named it Tanjig. BUT A lot of the WCSers don't Jive, so I can understand them not wanting to dance with someone that doesn't WCS. Does no one see that it could actually be intimidating for them to be expected to lead or follow a Jiver? I've heard a few of them say they find it so difficult to Jive. It is a two way thing, I agree that rudeness isn't acceptable ever, from either Jivers or WCSers.
