    Twitter

Twitter http://twitter.com/home seems to be gaining more momentum with high profile celebs twittering (eg. Stephen Fry and Jonathan Ross ('Wossy'). If you ain't heard of it, it is 'micro-blogging' - with the 140 character max. per 'twitter'.

Interesting article by Dave Snowden (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dave_Snowden) on his cognitive edge web site - here: http://www.cognitive-edge.com/blogs/..._the_flock.php

And JiveLad is also twittering (in a mildly entertaining way) - under the name 'JiveLad'. Of course, the whole thing is silly - and most of it is dross - although Dave Snowden's article is insightful.

    Anyone else twittering?

    Re: Twitter

I couldn't understand it when I went to have a look previously, but it did look fairly interesting on The One Show when they were talking about it. I don't think I really have anything interesting to talk about on it, especially given some of my really tedious facebook status updates.

    Re: Twitter

Surely it's all a bit attention-whoring though, isn't it? I couldn't give a flying **** what Stephen Fry was doing at 3pm, and I wouldn't expect people to really be the least bit interested in hourly (or more) updates on what I was doing.

some how I don't think I'll be updating this much I barely manage my Facebook status updates as it is at the moment.

    Re: Twitter

Since going back a couple of weeks ago I've found a few friends who twitter, and there are some news feeds and such that are sometimes got interesting things...

Wouldn't replace Facebook for keeping in touch with friends, but it's an interesting resource.

Was interested to hear that Facebook tried to buy Twitter recently...

I joined it months ago. Never got to grips with it and never log on, in fact, I can't even remember my password but, I still regularly get emails telling me that random people, who I've never heard of have started to follow me ................WHY?

Bit freaky I only joined 5 mins ago and have two followers one from Canada and one from Nepal ........suffice to say I have blocked them.

I'm still in the 'gimmick' stage I am sure it won't last besides which I am the only one listed on my page ..........still I have always been known for talking to myself

Internet marketers and worse follow people in the hope they will get follows in return. The nastier amongst them will direct message you with a link that tries to drop a virus. If they succeed they will hack your account and may send direct messages to your followers using your id to try and hack them.

If I block them is it quite safe?

Yes, people will often follow you, expecting you to follow them ... but if they follow you, nothing bad happens. There are a few porn ones that are obvious and I block them, but otherwise, I follow about 450 people at the moment and about 350 follow me. Many are friends and related to my business, but there are also loads who are simply funny and often link to articles or things that are amusing and I love design and hand-made articles and probably follow about 50 designers and design bloggers.

Twitter.com is not a great way to follow lots of people - it just gets too confusing, so I use TweetDeck and group the people I follow into columns. My friends go into one, another column for replies to things I've said and those that mention me (often on Follow Fridays - people suggest other people to follow), then a wedding one, one for some of the columnists and so on. If I'm busy, I just look at about two columns. I look at more of them when I'm on the move via my iphone through Tweetie or TweetDeck applications. If you and another tweeter are both following each other, you can also direct message each other - it's like a FB private message.

Some people block their updates from being public, often when they have two Twitter IDs - a business one and a personal one. But most of the time, tweets are available for the world to see. And if you use TweetDeck, you can link your FB account and update both at the same time.

The nice thing about Twitter is its slightly random nature and openess. I've been following @cesarmillan, the dog whisperer. He's now following me ... along with 56000 others and has about 60 000 followers. Twitter has also led to me meeting a wedding co-ordinator and I have ended up meeting friends when I've known they're out and I'm in the area. A wedding tweeter today also asked for recipe ideas for high protein soups. We've never met and probably never will, but I suggested a few kinds and she went off thinking about bacon and split peas. There's a kind of community-ness and interactivity about it. FB is really an online reflection of your offline world; Twitter is more like swirling seas of communication that you can join in or not, each with a slightly different mix - and you join the mixes you're interested in.

It's also amazing for breaking news. It's how I found out Michael Jackson had died and how many people had objected to the Daily Mail's Jan Moir story. If I want to know who won Strictly, search for SCD and there will be updates as it happens.

Hope that makes things more clear.

And do let us know what your twitter id is!

Sorry to come across as negative, but I felt I had to warn the new and innocent. I have made all sorts of remarkable discoveries through Twitter. For me it has been well worth the downsides. Twitter is very much a work in progress.

You can block spammers and report the worst ones by tweeting @spam @spammerid

Twitter and tweeters use # tags eg #scd #strictly #ceroc that are used to identify topics.

Use a strong password on your account, there is hacking going on.

Twitter is made to be usable from mobile devices, events are often reported by witnesses in near real time. Can be very annoying when I do not want

You can search for people near you and topics eg
    near:"mytown UK" dance classes

I tried to use such searches to find possible Ceroc recruits but had no joy with the things I tried.

Bigdjiver, your post has reminded me of another randomness of Twitter. I was in Abergavenny for the food festival so searched for 'abergavenny food festival' and found one of the performers from the Saturday night party and one of the foody people giving a talk and we exchanged tweets.

And I found the Brother-in-law of the dynamic Kerry who used to teach for Ceroc central and is now doing great things as a (the?) Ceroc Franchisee in Canada - much evidence on Youtube

Twitter is about leaders and followers and "What are you doing" and as such is a fascinating, and time consuming, behind the scenes peek at some of "What's happening", and who is doing it.

"The future is now, it is just not evenly distributed".
