    The seldom-seen kid

    Just a heads up.

Until the 7th February, if you have digital TV, tune to a BBC channel and press the Red button, one of the menu options is 'Elbow concert'.

This is Elbow, winners of last year's Mercury prize for their - um - CD The seldom-seen kid, in concert with an orchestra and choir from Abbey Road, playing that self-same Seldom seen kid. The performance is looped, so once they play the last track it starts again from the beginning.

The songs are fantastic, these are real musicians who craft their songs and are not scared to leave keyboards out of one song so that the keyboard player can play Second Percussion. Have a listen - standout songs for me are The bones of you, Mirrorball and An audience with the Pope.

It's played round on a loop that's about an hour long.

    It's also online here:

I listened to it a couple of days ago - I've had "Mirrorball" wistfully going round my head ever since.

Ouch!! If you shine a torch into your mouth does your room fill with sparkling spinning dots of light?

    Lyrics for you:
I plant the kind of kiss that wouldn't wake a baby,
on the self-same face that wouldn't let me sleep.
And the street is singing with my feet,
and dawn gives me a shadow I know to be taller
    All down to you, dear.
    Everything has changed.

My sorry name has made it to graffiti.
I was looking for someone to complete me.
    Not anymore, dear.
    Everything has changed.

You make the moon a mirrorball -
the streets an empty stage -
    the city's sirens, violins.
    Everything has changed

    So lift off love,
    all down to you, dear.
    And lift off love
    all down to you, dear.

And we took the town to town last night.
We kissed like we invented it!
And now I know what every step is for -
to lead me to your door.
    Know that while you sleep
    everything has changed.

You make the moon a mirrorball -
the streets an empty stage -
    the city's sirens, violins.

    Everything has changed.
    Everything has changed.
    Everything has changed...

    Lift off love...

Thanks for the info about it being online.

And although even that may not be 100% right. But it does make slightly more sense in the context of the song. ("Was last night amazing for you?" .. well it sounds like it was for him!)

In that case it's not a bad effort.
