The real unpleasantness starts when there's a lot of wind around though

HEADS UP FOR ROUND 2 THU/FRI!!...

There's now an increased risk of further disruptive snowfall for southern counties of England, up to approx the North Midlands, from Thursday evening through to and including Friday. Up to a foot of snow may well fall in some areas during this time .

I went to London Fields yesterday which was full of people building artistic snow men.

Some of them wore hats and glasses and those eyes on springs. (the snowmen)

My son lost his mobile somewhere though.....

It's noticable how friendly people are due to the snow.

I soon found my "snow legs" I acquired as a child in Yorkshire.

We would have all headed to the nearest slope with our toboggans. Every kid had one.

The gritters would have been out at the first whiff of snow, not now though, they are just as tardy in Yorkshire as in London.

Anyone have a good council that sends out gritters?

We do! The gritter was out late yesterday and there wasn't a bit of snow on the roads this morning. Mainly because it poured with rain all night though.

I know the forecasts are rough estimate of the weather in the week but looking at it now it doesn't seem that it'll be snowing on thursday, friday and saturday in London But appearently London will be in for a wet week with the amount of rain that is predicted.

It's certainly going to be a very close call as to wether it's snow or rain for London. The capital marks the very edge of the risk area. Don't be suprised however, if it starts as rain then turns to snow later on.

The Midlands are slap bang in the middle of it though

Yep i know, if it turns into heavy snow again like on monday then it'll interfere with public transport Today is just sunny I don't mind the rain.

Did anyone hear about the tornadoe that was seen off the coast of south Cornwall? I think it was the south.

I know you live in sunny Scotland, but can't remember where.

I remember in the 60's that North Yorkshire council would grit all the roads and pavements when snow was forcast.

Sometimes the snow never arrived, but the grit was down!!!

Also in London, there used to be grit boxes all over. You never see them now.

My road in Hackney has not been gritted yet. The pavements are still white with snow, but lethal.

NB son found his mobile, it was on the tow path for 5 hours and hadn't been picked up by anyone!

It's snowing steadily in Dundee now, started this lunchtime and it's getting white and pretty outside. The gritters were out last night and this morning, and around where I live there are plenty of salt/grit bins.

I think if it was sunny in Scotland that would be BBC breaking news

As you know if we get an inch south of watford you get 34 BBC reporters out and about

Most schools down south close if they here about snow

In fact Boris heard about an out break of the white stuff and thought it might be catching so stopped all london buses

Had 6 inches last night in North Oxfordshire, heaviest I have seen for 20 years

My snow man will get a much needed boost today

South east may get a dumping tomorrow

Forcast at present is cold to continue until at least monday (my birthday )

    Goodbye modern winter

Schools closed in Leicester on Monday, Tuesday and again today! We have had our knuckles rapped by the Director of Education. I certainly didn't want to take my car out at 7:30 this morning, it looks a bit better now, however.

The long distance weather forecast predicts much milder weather for next weekend, thank heavens. I don't want any epics on the road to Skeggie.

London looks like it's in for a snowy day tomorrow after 3pm. Im hoping the trains will still be operating to Victoria in the evening. Areas around Bristol have got the snowy day today.

    Re: The big snow event

Northants seems to have got the worst of it this time. We got off relatively lightly earlier in the week with just 2 or 3 inches of snow (and a lot of ice). Last night and early this morning we have had about 6 inches with drifts of a foot or more. It certainly looks very pretty as the snow is wet and has stuck to everything but even some main roads have been blocked, most buses aren't running and nearly all the schools are shut.

Forced to work from home today, but on the plus side an evening work meeting has had to be canceled tonight.

Can I ask where you're getting this from? BBC just says rain, but freezing overnight.

Am rather worried as I need to drive to a friend's funeral on Saturday morning, and have never driven in snow or icey conditions. Floods I have experience with, so torrential rain is fine!

    Re: The big snow event

In keeping with my decision to go for a substantial walk before breakfast, I got up at 8 on Monday and kept to my schedule even after I discovered it had snowed and was still snowing. I spent nearly 75 minutes walking around the Common, probably one of the most pleasant hours I've had for a year or so. Snow still there on Tuesday (and more snowing) but gone yesterday and again today.

Very pleased, however, that I didn't have to go to work; cars and people were having the greatest difficulty staying upright and steady.

    You are lucky

Today they have finally cleared and gritted the pavement on my side of the road.

I was listening to Terry Wogan this morning and one of his TOGS emailed in to say she finally saw a road gritter going along her road this morning...closely followed by a road sweeper.

The road sweepers here have a manual device for clearing ice in their cart.
