    Changing you Gas /Electricity supplier

    You see it on TV and a google will bring up companies that will tell you, who your cheapest suppliers are and hence you should switch to save money.

    I have even had unsolicited phone calls and always told them to go away.

    I have never switch suppliers as I think it will only be a couple of pounds difference and competition what it is , those that lose customers will have to reduce their prices to get them back.

    However wether this is true or not I haven't a clue

    My recent electricty bill was a joke (massive) and its only a guestimate (the real reading is much higher).

    Anyone switch and saved real money (more then say £50 a year)

    Got my combined bill yesterday, an eye watering £338 for the quarter. *ouch* so I am thinking of switching too.

    Money saving expert and similar search sites all make money from the companies that we are encouraged to switch to.

    Some companies take the view that that they can offer their customers a better deal by not having the Search engine fee as part of their overhead.

    The Utility Warehouse comes top of every independent Which report. They do not pay fees to the compare sites.

    Direct Line insurance is also independent.
    I'm sure there are others.
    You do a bit more work at renewal time but it keeps the costs down.

    I'm surprised they advise switching to Direct Debit.

    Companies take too much out of your bank and customers have massive credit on their bills which never gets taken off unless you insist.

    plus they are making interest out of your money, when you could be.

    Also if the company goes bust, you will never get your money back.

    I've been on a prepayment meter with NPower for years because at the time it suited me even though I knew I'd be paying more. But even though I thought I was paying for my electricity as I used it, I still had bills for over £80 a quarter - the excuse was that everytime I used my emergency I didn't pay the standing charge, or as fuel prices increased they couldn't recalibrate my meter in time.

    SO when they changed the meter I seized the opportunity and changed over to Scottish Southern, who was apparently the cheapest according to the web, and it was the biggest load of hassle I've ever had!
    With one company supplying the same electricity, and another owning the meter and NPower trying to stop you from switching - and you have a 0870 number connected to Asia, costing you everytime you use it to be put on 'Hold' for 30 minutes, only to speak to someone with a script who doesn't understand English!
    No wonder people choose to stay put. I've had the same experience with the telephone and broadband - so much for the 'free' market!
