Ladies legs in competitions...what costs them points?

I was wondering whether anyone could offer advice on whether followers, when competing, lose points for raising one of their legs in a drop?

Sounds a bit cryptic, I know...basically, I'm talking about a flourish with the non-supporting leg when the follower is put into, say, a ballroom drop or a seducer, such as kicking the leg up for emphasis.

The reason I'm asking is that several people have told me that this can cost you points in competition, but is this actually true?

Your shape looked perfectly fine to me when I danced with you.

I was going to say 'not shaving beforehand' but I don't think that's the answer you are looking for.

I suppose the flourish thing might cost points if done badly (and it's probably quite easy to do badly and much harder to do seamlessly and stylishly) because it will draw the judge's eyes to what's being done.

Cool, I'd wondered whether it was something that will get you points knocked off as a matter of course, but if it doesn't matter when done stylishly, then I won't have to tell my partner to stop doing it...

I think you should PM David and Lillie Barker as they are our resident MJ Judges, I am sure they will be able to give you their view as judges

Though misspelling "Lily" like that will probably cost you quite a few points...

Cheers I will drop them a line...or would but for some reason I can't send PMs...weird.

Those "several people" are wrong. Doing something badly is what loses you marks. Doing something well is what gains marks. A kick done well in the right place in the music will show musicality and gain marks. However, a floppy ankle or a bad line will lose marks.

The best advice I can give you is to film yourself and see what looks good and what doesn't. As a note on watching yourself on video - in general you will not look as good on the small screen as you do in the flesh.

David and Lily are always helpful and will give you great advice. However, one thing I've noticed about judges scores is a huge variation. Different judges are obviously looking for different things. Try to get the opinions of as many judges as you can - and try not to listen to those people who think they know what the judges are looking for but have never been in the final of a competition.

Depends what "several people" meant by "costs you points", if doing that extra flourish gains you a few points, then by NOT doing it you have cost yourself points. I've figured it out now, "not being Amir" has cost me oodles of competition points

(bonus points for anyone else you can fit "oodles" into conversation today)

This combines Zen with NLP quite nicely. By working diligently on avoiding any of the character traits or behaviours exhibited by Amir you will achieve enlightenment. However, you need to start small. I suggest a week of not having long floppy hair followed by a week of not having a dry sense of humour before you attempt not dancing Argentine Tango with poise and style

I'm having a bit of trouble not having the dry sense of humour but the rest is fine.

Incidently, and a serious on topic response for a bit, I was once told by Lily, who was judging a competition I entred, that she IGNORED me after an initial cursory glance, for the entire dance simply due to what i was wearing. So the little things clearly DO matter to a judge

Maybe not the best example. I don't think (but am open to contradiction) that Amir's competition achievements match his undoubted dancing ability.

I have had judges tll me they marked us down because we were in kilts and thus our lines were hidden. It doesn't really ring true to me... and am more convinced that they didn't like the kilts and our lines were poor because that would make more sense...

That's why it was left until week two. Prepare yourself for week two by failing to laugh at your own jokes or even find them remotely funny. Enlightenment through the combination of Zen and reverse NLP is a difficult path, fraught with danger. One wrong step and you could become a dance teacher

Was that the one where you were dressed as a Nun? I'm still trying to ignore the after-images

No, I have never dressed as a nun - are you thinking of Lindsay Browns Heaven and Hell routine at Britrock? I wasn't in that one (i certainly would have spoken to you if i had been, are you demented? )

That only time I was at Britrock, you were a sumo wrestler and i was a woman.

Ahh, the good old days before people started wanting to actually win competitions

Is this a question that needs and answer? Or even asking in the first place?
