    Exclamation Internet Explorer Panic!

I don't usually forward these things, but this seems particularly nasty.

There is a weakness in Internet Explorer that allows hackers to get into your PC and steal valuable data, logins, passwords etc.

A colleague at work found a hacker had got into his home PC and installed a "Keylogger" and screen capture program. He's had to spend all day getting rid of it and changing all of his passwords.
Microsoft are releasing a patch today, but in the meantime the advice is to not use Internet Explorer.

Personally, I only use Firefox, so I'm not worried, but I suspect plenty of you are probably at risk.

I read this thread smugly thinking that I do not visit dodgy websites so I am OK, then realised that I had already visited the site pointed to in the thread "smooth stone blog", which is just the sort of way a hacker would exploit this, getting google alerts to do the work.

Also if you look at the bbc's take on the virus they say that any website can have the code planted on it
I am smug as i never use IE but any web browser will have flaws where unscrupulous people could find a way in

No, I just don't think you're in a position to make such a sweeping statement (you don't work in the office of national statistics, do you?). The colleague that was telling me his experiences is an experienced and respected senior developer and he prefers IE.

Who are you going to poll? Is there a "computer-savvy people" forum?

I am entitled to my opinion due to the years of experience i have had helping people with computers
I regularly read most of the computer magazines and a lot of other technical publications both in my professional status as an industrial electrician and my personal status as a nosey sod
i think you will find that my statement holds true.

    respected by whom?
Obviously he has problems with viruses funnily enough after 33 years of running personal computers in their various forms I have never had a virus on any machine i have owned simply by doing all the common sense things ie never opening an attachment on an unsolicited email making sure my software is fully updated, Making sure my firewall is set up correctly (so that any key logger cant call home) etc etc

You're entitled to your opinion, however you came by it. Doesn't make it correct though.

    Nope.

Erm, his boss, colleagues, team and all the people he works with.

The thing is Martin, it's about personal preference and whether you like it or not, there are plenty of "computer-savvy" people that like IE and continue to use it. You never having had a virus, does not make people who have had, wrong or less able.

This comment is entirely irrelevant (not to mention mis-spelt) - I therefore confirm that Gav is the winner.

    What counts as "computer savvy?"

Knowing how to switch one on?

Knowing one end of a USB cable from the other?

    Knowing how to use Word?

    Knowing how to install software?

Knowing how to upgrade a computer?

Knowing how to build a computer?

Knowing how to program a computer?

    Being Bill Gates?

The statistics show that 70% of the world still use IE.

So? It sounds very much like you are suggesting that you shouldn't be allowed a PC unless you have a degree in "Savvy Computer Knowledge", or you deserve to get a virus.

Well there is only one way of staying safe from all these nasty computer viruses, just make sure you do it before you connect your computer to the internet

I would say having a good understanding of both hardware and software regardless of operating system used.

Doesn't say anything about those users and, considering IE is glued into Windows, counts for very little. And its certainly not 70% of "the world"

Better statistics are here at w3c - users of w3c are very likely to have thought and "chosen" their browser rather than accepted the IE "default", so it is a much more accurate estimate. It shows that Firefox is by far the most popular browser with 44.2% use. IE7 and IE6, two very different browsers come in at 26.6% and 20.0% respectively.
