Sports Personality of the Year - A Worthy Winner

I was very glad to see Chris Hoy pick up the Sports Personality of the Year Award. And in contrast to the gushing emotional cripples we saw over the weekend on Strictly and X-Factor I though his acceptance speech was superb.

What a year for British sport!

The award was sports personality of the year, yes? Not sports team with squillions thrown at it supporting one man who is driving the best car at the time?

Whilst I agree that both personalities have teams behind them, could it be that Chris Hoy's achievements are more personally driven and down to his individual effort than Hamilton's?

    Just a question...

Winning the Drivers Championship was an achievement, no argument. But in winning this young Mr Hamilton didn't dominate his sport like Chris Hoy did in Beijing.

I've got no doubt Lewis will be back in competition for this again (squillions of quid of McLaren money permitting of course)

Well speaking as a McLaren employee.. I don't think he should have.

He got through with the skin on his teeth, it certainly wasn't a landslide victory and he has another go to better himself next season. The Olympians had one shot, boom or bust and they excelled themselves .. I think they made the right choice.. IMHO.

However...the UK cycling team's success in Beijing was due in no small part to the Government investing heavily in the sport. I've heard Team GB described as the Chelski of the cycling world! There have been British Olympic cyclists in years gone by who were probably up there with Hoy and Wiggins, but because no-one ever gave them the money or facilities, they never got near the podium. The decision was taken a few years back (after the abysmal Atlanta Olympics IIRC) to focus investment in events where the best chances for medals were. No point in spending it all on the track and field, when you're up against the might of the US college system, for example.

Whether you consider the British government's current levels of investment in sports cycling as "natural" is up to you. Personally, given the atrocious levels of support for cycling in general in the UK, it looks like the Government's not even asking us to eat cake, but simply stare in wonderment at the cherry on top

Still, congrats to Hoy - with 4 cyclists nominated I thought the vote'd be split, but apparently not.

I personally thought Becky should have won. They are all great achievements but for me her's was the biggest. The only swimming world record from the 20th century to have survived and 1989 at that just shows what an outstanding performance it was to smash it, and all at 19. If we weren't so shocking at swimming as a nation, she might have got her third gold in a team event too! Hoy ahead of Hamilton for 2nd
