Yeah, I'd agree with that. If it's not compulsory, you do wonder if you're gonna do a "Del & Rodney" and be the only ones turning up in fancy dress. It's actually quite comforting to know that EVERYONE has to join in the fun.

I love dressing up. In fact Midnight at the Oasis was my favourite night this year. It was great to see everyone had made a real effort and all the ladies looked super sexy and full of Eastern promise.

I am all for creating the right environment but you should not loose sight of the reason we are going.

Obviously we all want a good time but we judge that mainly by the dance experience we get. The fancy dress bit etc just compliments that.

From my point of view where the fancy dress code aids the dance experience people willingly get into the swing of things. I think that is where themes that allow you to dress to make you more cool (temperature wise) such as "Midnight at the Oasis", Beach Party themes and others where you an wear less cloths people appreciate that. Or if you want to go the other way Black Tie I think people appreciate that.

Its where the theme does not help the dancing that I find a bit of a wasted effort.

I like fancy dress - it makes the event much more of an event because of the time in preparation, thinking on a costume, getting it together, getting ready, meeting folk before-hand, discussing what costume to ware, themeing a group of you...

...it's much more than throwing a spare T-shirt into a bag and grabbing your shoes on the way out the door.

It also depends on what you think on as "fancy dress" - a tux and gun for Bond, a slinky dress and microphone and you could take your pick of divas, ... you can still get glammed up, not look a pillok, and be part of fancy dress.

Compulsory or not - I don't really mind because I would dress up any way: It makes no odds to me

Speak for yourself, if it was just another freestyle, I'd probably find something more interesting or more local.

Similar stature!!! (basturd) TC is 5'7'' in high heels and I'm 5'9 and 2/8ths'' - not even in the same ball park. And if I had a bushy carpet mop on my head like yours I would be at least another inch taller!

Yeah, I'd go along with that.

Knowing that 'everyone's' going to be dressed up, takes the worry out of thinking 'what if I'm the only one?'

Also, someone made a point about not wanting to look silly, well, IMO people who go out with the attitude of having fun, allowing people to have a laugh 'with them' have a far better time, than those who choose costumes to try look cool or sexy, as there's always the danger that they, err..... won't!

There isn't an emoticon for baiting a hook so this will have to do

Hmm, I get a strong sense of deja vu

Listen baldy, the only crack I can think of is the stuff you must be smoking when you put together your playlists

My hips are fine, it's the belly that looks like it's carrying triplets

But really, you should leave these digs to SF, he manages to make them in a humourous way

Can't argue with the 2nd part of your sentence, but beg to differ with the first. They say the camera never lies and this pic's got it all! The carpet, the hips, your fancy dress outfit, your favourite WCS move and the 5 bellies..

I think this is an introvert thing, people already think they look stupid - they just don't want to draw too much attention to themselves with costumes in case others notice that they look stupid .

As regards the mask thing. Again really easy and cheap to do - so I don't understand the criticism; where's your sense of romance and mystery?? Sure you can take it off, and yes you can get hot, and yes they aren't very comfortable, and yes they can restrict your periphereal vision, but good grief...
As someone who wore a costume and mask for 9 hours at a recent dance event, much to the delight of people who didnt have to see my face, i don't see the big deal. And peripheral vision is pretty much unaffected if you get a mask that fits.

Where you know everyone is going to make an effort, it should put your mind at rest about the dress code in that you will be sure that you won't stand out too much. So actually the idea behind the cumpulsory bit is to create an environment where people will feel more comfortable, not less comfortable!
Seems like a good idea to me. In fact the "unknown" bit makes for a much more social evening as inhibitions are generally lowered.
