Apparently your level of comprehension of my comments validates the second half of my sig.

Digging a bit deeper, it appears that ministers were genuinely clueless - apparently Special Branch (who fall under the counter-terrorism unit for some reason) were called in by the Head of the Cabinet Office, rather than by ministers.

So it's looking more like massive clunking incompetence rather than actual malice. Which, scarily enough, is a little reassuring.

Still doesn't justify the actions of course, nor the Government's brazen and shameless response. But it's an explanation.

I can't believe how much I'm really hating this Government now; they're an almost-perfect blend of nastiness and incompetence. ...
This may be wrong, I have not being paying too much attention to things I cannot change.

If the Chief Commissioner gets it wrong he can be asked to resign, but the present Commissioner has already resigned. He seemed to think he was doing so under duress from a Conservative politician.

Operational matters are a matter for the Chief Commissioner. In this country the police act under the law, not under the direct control of politicians. A point the police can be expected to make quite forcibly to any Home Secretary, or future Home Secretary.
