What type of buggy did you use for your babies

Well, i have heard it all now. Apparantely, if you push your baby in a buggy/pram that faces away from you they could face lasting psychological damage.

Im a worried mother now. Both my sons were in buggies facing the other way. Both appear to be normal.. but do i have to worry that in the next few years they will start scraping their bottoms along the floor.

    Thoughts guys/gals......

What I want to know is - how the hell you managed to spell psychological right and get apparently wrong.

I suppose it's all relative to the ugliness of the parents. All things considered, I think your two got the less psychologically damaging end of the stick.

Im sure thats only for teeny tiny babies. With ours once they were old enough to try and pull themselves up, then they started to get more interested in the world around them and wanted to look out. So then they faced front, ready for anything, armed with rattles and a killer smile.

"Buggy", another US imported word I hate. What's wrong with pram and pushchair?

What makes you think it's American?
I think you'll find that it's a contraction of "Baby Buggy". The "Buggy" bit comes from the 2 wheeled horse drawn vehicles found in the UK, recorded as early as 1770.

It's not the root word I object to, just the death of perfectly good UK words to be replaced by US ones. The use of buggy, as in "Baby Buggy" is a US phrase. I've also heard British English speakers talking about "Strollers" and "Daipers". I blame too much US TV.

Don't even get me started on talking about "Baby", when one means the/our/that/your baby.

I wonder if my pent up anger comes from my parents' transporting me in pushchairs.

Does it follow that car seats for children are bad, as they also stop parents from interacting.

But where would that leave the new version of Internet Explorer..."I hear it's very pram and pushchair"?

P.S - I agree re. the American influence on our language

I hate "pushchair" - i've never heard it in Scotland, its probably some weird southern yokel aberration. I don't mind "buggy" though

It would seem the Collapsible baby buggy was invented by Owen Finlay Maclaren, of the that Clan

I don't like "Americanisms" sneaking in, but it also annoys me when people rant about it without checking first.
A lot of the time, what we think of as an American bastardisation of our pure, beautiful language is actually more correct than the English equivalent. That is, the Americans have kept the original word/grammar/expression is we have bastardised it over the years!

He called it the "Collapsible baby carriage" in the Patent applications and the initial marketing. I can't find any reference to "Baby buggy" in relation to Maclaren's product until it was marketed in the US.

The Americans really should try to keep up! Their dialect is so 400 years ago!
