I walk past Matalan in Dalston a lot. The few times I've been in I thought the clothes were awful.

    Will check it out.

Re: Advice on clothing for freestyle events!

Hello, i am booked up for a black and white ball over xmas but have no idea what is best to wear that can be danced in?

Being a man i don't need any thing too fancy but in past when i have worn a shirt i always found it to restrictive around shoulders.

Anyone any advice on what to wear that will still allow some movement?

    cheers

personally i like to wear a shirt when i am dancing my problem is i tend to need at least three of them
I always try to wear short sleaved shirts they still look smart yet are not too restrictive

Buy a shirt a size larger with the same collar size: it being baggy allows freedom of movement, air to circulate and cool you quicker, less of the material to 'cling' to a sweaty back, and dries quicker. (Jacobean shirts are fab for this )
Lighter materials (in weight) generally cool quicker and let more heat through rather than keeping it in, but they tend to show the 'damp' more than heavier materials. (Light weight Jacobean shirts are impossible to find now )

If you still want the look of a more fitted shirt, consider a waistcoat - it will make you much hotter and prevent the shirt from drying out as quick, but there is another layer between the sweat-soaked shirt and the follower's hands. And it allows unrestricted movement. Down side is that a larger shirt size may give you a mid-rift ruffle between waistcoat and trousers that needs tucked in (Not sure if a waist-coat and un-tucked shirt is OK on the fashion front, but personally I prefer the look of it buttoned up with shirt tucked in.)

    PS - avoid silk.
It is very tactile, feels really nice to dance with... but when it gets wet, it sticks to your skin like a second skin. And it's not as flexible as your own skin, so it will tear at the weakest points ie shoulders. I've ruined three silk shirts with Hulk impressions (you would think I would learn after the first )

I just wear two t-shirts, short sleeved t-shirt over a long sleeved t-shirt...one problem you can get very hot! but keeps the outer shirt dry. Plus if I am wearing a a hawiian shirt I sling it over a long sleeved white tshirt (I have a half wardrobe full of them) and it sits just fine and will flare out for a style effect! It doesn't get too hot either and keeps the shirt dry

Avoid anything which might show up sweaty armpits! Basically dress for summer, all year round.

If your top allows it, get some coolmax/wicking tops to wear underneath. They soak up the sweat, dry quickly and can stop you changing your top frequently, and you stop feeling quite so hot in them too.

I'm not certain they are the best option for a base layer, as they wick sweat to the outer layer (which the idea is to keep dry) quickly and efficiently.

    Just a thought.

Saw a topic on clothes and had to add to it!

I swear by having the following items in your wardrobe for dance:

. Black (or different colours) leggings (for going under skirts or wearing under dresses if not confident enough to wear alone)
. dance shorts (for putting under skirts and dresses so you can feel safe and secure lol)
    . a few skirts
. And array of sleevless tops and dresses (for anti-sweat purposes)
. 80d tights to wear with mini-skirts ( or if you like your legs to be obvious natural or lower denier).
.a few brilliant coloured leg-warmers to funk up a mini-skirt/top combo.

I'm always wearing something and leggins or thick tights. As long as I can kick up my leg and not show me knickers im happy lol.

Icebreaker Merino wool t-shirts really work for me. They breathe much better than cotton (IMO) and much more comfy and stretchy.

I was just wondering if anyone can recommend where to buy some pretty tops or comfy trousers that would be good to dance in as my repetoire of dance clothing at present is quite limited!

They come in different weights and colours - there is a thermal range, but a light, sporty range too:
