OK, OK... but isn't it amazing that the people who pop up to defend the prices are those who don't have to pay them It's not a case of can't afford it, it's a case of wont! Looking at Swish (let's not go there...) it seems the prices are about the same and that sells well. I wish the organisers all the best with it.

If I go, I will have to pay but can see that the final cost of the weekend does not end with just the room price.

£270 is a lot, yes, especially considering it finishes at 11pm on Sunday.

But, you know, it's called "Lux", not "Cheapo".... the name's a bit of a give-away, surely?

Good to see that there's some "outreach" in terms of teachers and DJs - although I'm not sure I'd trust Amir with a DJ set for the Milonga, he's likely to play Peter Gabriel or some such weird stuff...

All good, you pay your money and make your choice.

A lot of dancers have money.

Many dancers I know have a lot of cash.

Those who have the cash will go.

If you are looking for cheap weekenders, there are a few around.

That is exactly what I was thinking in relation to Amir's DJing but maybe he will play more apt tunes at Lux.

My only other thoughts on the DJ front were that it was a shame Sheepman and Lizard Lounge were not on the list.

Can we have a poll to see if
affluent dancers = good looking, experienced dancers.
Then we can decide whether it'll be worth paying the high price or not.

You realise that for that price, you could hire Amir for an entire day of private tuition?

I am sure the event will be a success and kudos again to the Utopia and Ceroc TV teams for trying it. Yes, it's more expensive than other weekenders but there are a number of dancers for whom money seems no object. For me personally I don't think I will be there given the proximity to other, more traditional weekenders and my wish to sample some dancing in the States as some point next year. I tend to go to weekenders to dance all hours so the luxury factor or otherwise of the location and the standard of the food isn't of great importance to me. I am sure others will have a different view.

Im sure im paying very similar for Rockbottoms. Isnt that the usual price for a luxury weekend.....

I just spend a weekend in Clacton for my dads 70th. Staying in a holiday inn express and a pub meal in evening plus drinks. Scarface and i did 300 quid. One night and no dancing.

I think the price is quite good. Maybe its just me.!!

No, Rockbottoms is £175 pp I think. So Lux is about £100 more.

Realistically a 3 night break in a 4 star hotel on DBB (Dinner Bed & Breakfast could easily cost £210 plus!

So £270 to include dance classes, DJ's, music etc is not excessive, but equally it is over double what most of us pay for a holiday camp weekender

I'd love to go but unfortunately my finances have got no chance of coping with that as well as both Eclipse's and maybe Storm so unless I win the lottery then I wont be there

Lux is only a two night break. From the hotels web site the published DBB rate for the Coppid Beech is £109 per room, or £218 for a couple for a two night DBB break, about standard. So Lux is adding a premium of £320 per couple, or £160 per person, for just the dance element.

There are various room types at the hotel and the price you have quoted is for the cheapest type. As I understand it Utopia are taking all the rooms.

The Utopia price also includes lunch and as far as I could remember that cost about £15 at the hotel. You will also see that one evening the dinner is a gala dinner that will also put up the price the hotel would normally charge.

As regards the dance element of the weekend it appears that they are running three classes in parallel for upto 600 people and not the 1500 people you would get at a big weekender. Then look at the line up of teachers, they are all top drawer. I have lost count at the number of DJ's being used but they also appear to be the same as in a big weekender.

As this is a one off event the overheads are going to be that much more and then I suppose they have to give some sort of royalty to Ceroc.

I am sure they have budgeted in a reasonable profit but what would anybody else do if they organised a similar event and from the dance point of view they certainly are trying to deliver.

The only problem I have with the event is that they are not taking single bookings.

Re: Lux - the Utopia luxury weekend

    This definately sounds interesting.

First and foremost I am under the impression that the price isnt too bad. Then again, I say that and then continue to second guess myself I really don't know. Unfortunately, either way I really don't think my finances will stretch either given the other weekenders that I cant miss.

I really enjoyed my one and only visit to a Rockbottoms weekender many moons ago in Torquay. That is the only thing I can base my opinions on really as its the only other hotel based weekender I have done. Great fun but since then the big weekenders have taken priority.

I hope the Utopia venture is a success. Always good to give people options. Keeps things interesting!
