    Why do beginners leave?

Following on from comments on the thread about ladies leading, I was wondering what organisers do to try to establish why beginners don't come back.

On a similar topic I would be interested to know whether the organisers of weekenders or workshops ask for feedback after the event.

I know that the weekends are discussed on the forum but there are many many people who do not post or are not interested in the forum (honest there are but would probably like the opportunity to feedback on what they thought worked well or didn't and surely this could be really useful to the organisers.

    Any thoughts?

    Re: Why do beginners leave?

    1. Some people are just looking for a boyfriend/girlfriend. When they meet one they both leave.

    2. A friend of mine left because his new girlfriend didn't like going to ceroc.

    3. Another friend had too many other hobbies, and when he lost his job, ceroc was first for the chop.

Two other friends only went once and didn't like it.

Given that - by definition - you won't get many answers on this forum from beginners who've left, maybe we could twist the question - why do people stay?

Double trouble reminded me on another thread why one of them didn't return.

He was in line during the class and because he couldn't do the move (it was his first time) she refused to carry on and stood well back with her arms folded while the class carried on around him. How embarrassing.

I told him she is a bit screwy (which she is), but the damage was done.

Well - by a process of deduction from Astro's suggestion, it must be because they never meet the boyfriend / girlfriend. I blame all those girls who are dancing as leads

Coat of mine I now get will.

True - all other dances they can get pretty much pale into insignificance after that. I'll try to keep my Mad Skillz more in check in the future

    Re: Why do beginners leave?

I gave up originally because I got bored and hadn't found out about the wider world of freestyles/weekenders.

I don't know whether it was because it was a small local venue and the variety wasn't as high (though everyone was friendlier)

When I returned almost a year later, I booked for Breeze, found the blues room/forum and an addiction began...

    Re: Why do beginners leave?

Why do *beginners* not come back?

    • They don't like the dance or music – maybe they were looking for Salsa or something.
    • They think they can't do it. Especially for guys, there's a steep learning curve, and you need to keep at it.
    • They don't like the people – too old/young/ugly/weird/unfriendly.
    • They don't like getting "close" to strangers. A friend wanted to learn Salsa, but couldn't deal with the dancing with strangers bit.
    • They enjoy it, but they've got busy lives, and they never get around to going back.
    • High expectations. Big disappointment.

Most of these, there's little anyone can do to fix.

this is where the new practice session works it keeps people working hard even if they get it wrong to start with
then after a short time everyone seems to get it
