That's one heck of a period! I bet those around you were on edge

Seriously though, I know how hard it can be to give up. I finally managed it a little under 5 years ago, after 24 years of smoking and numerous attempts. I wish anyone trying to give up the very best, and sincerely hope you succeed

I gave up drinking for 5 years and when I split with my ex and moved away, I thought, i'm free and I can do whast I like, so I thought having a couple of drinks (like normal people) will be OK, Proplem was some times I was OK but sometimes I wasn't and I couldn't predict when I wasn't going to be ok, so on the 2nd January 2004 I decided that drinking didn't suit me.

all I can say is I didn't have a drink yesterday and I hope I won't have one tomorrow, today is looking good.

I would just like to say there are people in the dance world that believe drinking is an illness, I have never been to AA and I think it might be the way they support there members, this is NOT my belief.

    I drank

i'm not drinking at the moment

Its my choice MINE and if I drink it will be MY fault not anyone else's not an illness just lack of self control, I would support anyone I can in there help with alcohol, but only they can do it.

Good luck to all those who think alcoholism is a question of getting your act together, moral fibre or will power, ill go down the illness route any day

Buried to many who rely on will power

    Each to their own

ps I stopped drinking 14 years and 13 days ago one day at a time

brilliant willpower as is any additiction if you can kick it. Some take support and some can do it on their own. I have mucho respect for any addiction that somebody has managed to kick with or without help.

one day at a time is the perfect way to look at drinking, i think drinking is extremely hard to kick as its part of peoples social life generally, thankfully smoking is not anymore and is looked upon as a disease on society which i totally agree with by the way....

Entering the end of my second day today..... i think by the third day the nicotine is out of ya body and your fighting the habit.... think i read that somehwere.... Still having pangs but i just give my little pretend cigerette a pull and it takes it away.

    i am determined.

I got a B in my first philosophy essay on Plato's theory of the forms.

It's an amazing achievement for me and im really pleased because i honestly thought i was going to fail, its such a deep subject after all and not everyone can handle it so...

Does losing four stone in one year count?? More of a lifechange than a diet, but I still feel great about it

Re: what have you done to make you feel proud.

Just to get this thread back on track....

One guy on this forum is definitely a knight in shining armour: pmjd.
He's several times turned up unexpected at my door with flowers, because he's known that I'm a bit down, or because I'm having a hard time, or 'just because'. He's generous with hugs, a shoulder to cry on and is an extremely good listener. He even got into his car at about 11pm and drove 20 minutes to get to my place just to help me get rid of a guy who wouldn't take 'no' for an answer once!

At all the weekenders we've attended, he's let me borrow his fleecy blanket, which kept me alive at the last two Blaze weekenders (brrrrrr!)! When he moved to Manchester, he called me the day before he was due to leave, and said he had something he needed to drop off at my place. He came around with a huge present, and when I opened it, it was the fleecy blanket! That's possibly the sweetest present I've ever received! Cat - you're on to a winner, honey!

I have a lot of fantastic friends on the dance scene, and one thing I appreciate immensely is all the people who give me lifts to dances all over the country. A lot of them often phone me to offer lifts, and at a couple of occasions I've received two or three offers for lifts to the same venue by different people! You guys are fantastic!

I also want to thank all my friends who are always ready with a cuddle whenever a cuddle is needed.
