Tom Baker came 3rd and was not a teacher at the time.
Obviously in MJ events there are separate categories i.e. intermediate, advanced and Open. Some are lacking Advanced and I think that is a big mistake.
I was trying to remember the blues champs last year and identify who were the highest placed non teachers in the open comp or the dance with a stranger. I think probably all contained a teacher.
As an incentive to non teachers, I am thinking it would be great to have placings for 1 to 6 if they do not already exist and to identify an unofficial winner for a pairing that did not contain a teacher ( an equivilent to an advanced win )
Anyone remember?
Any thoughts?
Steve
Tom Baker came 3rd and was not a teacher at the time.
I was left with a burning question from this thread and it looks like the competition made a lot of difference to me and enjoyed by a lot of people who were there.
The statement above is unclear about blues champions of what competition and when.
What are the current blues competitions in the UK at present?
Spiky
Well, there's the one that the legendary Howard Temple won, the one that the legendary-but-portly David Rokov won, I think Nigel & Nina won one, there's the one that's been running at Beach Boogie for a few years now.... God knows, I can't keep track.
Gus has started about 50,000 threads on this topic (roughly), here's a couple:

There may be some more information in there.
Was wondering .... outside the Forum .. did anyone know there was a Blues Champs on at Breeze? No-one I know knew anything about it, but admittedly most of them are in the N West and N East where Ceroc is not so dominant. One may think that for a Competition to have some standing, people should know it exists?
Thanks but that was not the purpose of my post. The purpose was to clear up a point that seemed to try to undermine a competition and the efforts of competitors before it had even started. That includes the efforts of the organisers as well as the competitors.
Thanks again
Steve
I think a lot of people who are interested in blues would know about the breeze weekender and competition now and head that way should they be significantly interested in blues dancing.
In my opinion the weekender has lead the way in blues dancing introducing Lucky and Ruby last year and having a strong blues theme amongst other things. I believe the only other blues weekender was in Scotland but I couldn't make that
Meanwhile, if I were to search for a competition I would look on www.modernjive.com under the competitions link and the competition is listed there.
I think you will find it hard to expect independants to advertise a Ceroc event but you can ask them if you like
Steve
... not sure what basis you have for that. There ARE Blues dancers outside Ceroc AND outside the S East .. and as I said, many didn't know about it. I must that I don't immediately associate Ceroc with Blues. HAVING SAID THAT, the Breeze competition is the only Blues competition at the moment so your achievement in winning the event demands due respect.
Good point. Another possible view is that given that Lucky & Ruby's style of Blues bears no relation to UK Blues (see all the postings last yaer) a more appropriate forum for a Blues Champs would be the N&N Blues event in Jan which IS well known as a blues event through the UK. After all, its N&N who got thge Blues things going and are still recognised by many as the 'soul' of Blues ... if I may mix metaphors so badly.
"Blues" events have been going on in the UK Modern Jive scene for at least 10 years to my knowledge.
So your opinion is, if not totally wrong, missing out a heck of a lot of context.
There's also many many debates about what "Blues" is within an MJ context - did you actually read those threads I linked to? And those debates have been going on for several years also.
I'd be very interested in your input in this area, of course, but if you did a bit of background research on this area it might help.
(My opinion, FWIW, is that there's "Blues" and there's "MJ Blues", and that they're two different animals.)
My view is that Breeze is still seen principally as a MJ weekender during which a competition happens rather than a competition around which a weekend is based (and I don't think that Ceroc would want it to be the other way around). I don't think this detracts from the achievement of winning it but it does indicate why it may not have the profile nationally of some of the other competitions.
Other competitions tend to stand on their own as events which gives them a stronger focus and a more distinct profile. All IMHO.
