    Paul Newman's best film?

A great actor in the classic mould, who died today.

I think my favourite was 'Cool Hand Luke'.

Dave - you stick to your knitting and I'll be the spelling master - ok? You must be reading too many American books right now. See freedictionary.com:

    mould 1 or US mold
    Noun
    1. a shaped hollow container into which a liquid material is poured so that it can set in a particular shape: pour the mixture into a buttered mould, cover, and steam for two hours
    2. a shape, nature, or type: an orthodox Communist in the Stalinist mould
    3. a framework around which something is constructed or shaped: the heated glass is shaped round a mould inside a kiln
    4. something, esp. a food, made in or on a mould: salmon mould

PS I remember reading a book about poker - which said the best film about poker was........'The Hustler'. Confused - well yes - as it was about pool. However, as the book pointed out, it was about winning and losing.

I can't decide between Cool hand s Luke, The Sting or Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid....

All have some epic Newman moments.

    RIP Mr Newman

    Cool Hand Luke for me.

Never tried his Newmans sauces, but I've heard they don't have addititives and E numbers in, so they are safe to eat.

    Have they finished making them?

This is a Brando-esque picture - mean and moody - probably from his early days. (B+W - so it doesn't show his blue eyes!).

As for the sauces......well Henry Heinz died 90-odd years ago, and his ketchup is still going strong! Maybe Paul made provision for continuing (or not) the sauce charity - my guess is that they would continue in some form.

It would have to be either Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid or the Sting for me.

I think BCATSK was more Robert Retford's film than Newmans.

I thought he had died about 20 years ago but got him mixed up with Steve Mc Queen

Got to be Towering Inferno and the one I saw recently when he was in a chain gang

    Towering inferno?

Not to be forgotten: Cat on a hot tin roof was a great performance. Also Moving target and the sequel The drowning pool, a surprising performance in Hitchcock's Torn curtain (most amazing murder scene ever filmed, at least until Blood simple came along), and also an understated performance in Absence of malice.

Cool hand Luke is an outstanding film, and he was oscar nominated for it; but as is often the case with Oscars it is the noticeable story lines that provoke nominations and awards. Quieter films and better performances are often overlooked.

    Exodus [1960]

As a young teenager I fell in love with him after seeing this film, I even got my mother to buy me the same "Star of David" he wore in the film to remind me of him ..............ahhhhh

Great film Minnie, I read the book also. Apart from Paul Newman being sexy and gorgeous and making you swoon with those bluest of blue eyes, he was so grounded, not a bit up his own backside or caught up in the Hollywood thing. His films told a good story, The Verdict, Cool Hand Luke, The Hustler, great loss

    Slapshot.

Great film. Great performance. Not dissimilar to the role in Color of Money, but a little sleazier and cheekier. Incredibly expressive eyes...

One of my all time favourite films ever, always remember the "hanson triplets", god they were ugly.
One of the few films I have cried from laughing so much
