Ok sport fans here;s the rub...
Recieved a phone call yesterday afternoon from some chap called Ed who works for Liebherr.
Turns out one of their 800 tonne cranes has a split in the boom, there is only 2 in the country and Liebherr have them both, 1 in Biggleswade and 1 up north somewhere.
They needed a wind proof tent erected around the boom to enable some mig/tig welding to repair the boom.
Turns up on me own this morning to do the job, young lad let me down again, working away with the 2 German specialists, flown in to repair it, when 1 of them goes into one and starts ranting about the cutting discs being like marshmallows.
The steel of these booms are 16 times stronger than normal hard steel. Now he ordered some special discs which can cope with this level of hardness.
Ed comes down and has a long and intense conversation with the German lads, in German I may add, and then says, "Leave it with me I shall sort it"
Turns out these discs are not available in this country and only available in germany.
20 mins later Liebherr Chairman;s helicopter lands in the yard and takes the head storeman over to Germany to pick up the discs...I could not believe it.
Now i moan about using a 1st class stamp and these boys send a helicopter to Germany to pick up some discs. Finished the job aand Ed comes down to thank me, telling me I am now on their approved subcontractors list and gives me his card.....He is only the General Manager.
Stone me talk about swimming with sharks.
I was flabbergasted. By the way the crane is almost sexually arousing, it is gorgeous, a thing of beauty which can lift 800 tonnes up to a height of 75 metres, stunning bit of kit.
Sounds like quite an uplifting experience Dave
Went back into Liebherr this morning to dismantle the wind proof tent and was informed that another part was sent over from Spain for the crane but was so heavy it was loaded off the plane.
They have only booked another plane just for this part and it will be landing this morning and trucked up asap.
Talk about another world. Had a quick stroke of the crane whilst I was there, seemed rude not to.
