So, MJ-water-aerobics?
A winner, or what?

I think you're being a little too absolute about that. It depends on what is offered, and how much it is publicised. Tango dancers didn't seem to have a problem, and the considerable use was made outside Tango times.
I think it the marquee worked very well. In particular the sound quality was was always good.
The stage wasn't obcured by pillars as in the Latin room.
Once the tables and chairs were added around the edge it worked much better than the dance den had.
With the loss of the dance den it maintained Southport as the only weekender with 4 simultaneous choices of freestyle, and I thought quite an inspired solution.
Doing that rather than making do with the 3 remaining rooms was IMO an example of Jive Addiction doing it better than anyone else.
Because it was near the entrance people would check it out on the way in.
It would have been good to make those blue plastic things from June available whether it is raining or not, at all entrances to both locations though.
After using the M6 twice to get from London to York and back, and seeing on both occassions pile ups, I switched to the A1(M) for all my trips to see my parents.
You don't get the speed maniacs that love the M6.
A1 - first road?
London to Edinburugh - passes Grantham.
*It's at least 10 years since I've driven on it, and only as far as Scotch Corner.
I've cleaned out all the off-topic posts and flaming from this thread to a new outside thread and moved this thread back "inside". Please keep this thread clean.

OK, to get back on track, looking through this thread, so far we have:
- Keep SP traditions
- Look at communal transport
- A separate room for private classes
- Make it easy to get between rooms without changing shoes etc.
- An invitational Jack 'n Jill with all the Eclipse teachers
- A "spontaneous" planned dance time, maybe starting in the common parts and corridors incorporating some Columbian and Brazilian street band music and conga chains
- Some sort of video linking / interactive playlist between rooms ("What's on next" display)
and, of course:
- MJ-water-aerobics
So, any others?

I think it is great that Andy is looking to communual transport, now if other people in other areas can do the same that would be great - and would also deal with the "driving home tired" issue.
I would not see this as something for the organisers of the event to do, but for local people to band together and do.
The one thing the organisers could look to do, is provide a link from the local rail station (if sufficient numbers are coming by rail).
I am not sure how benificial this is overall - with an audience of 1500, what % would be doing private lessons? I see this more as a cash cow for the teachers.
Aww come on, I am sure people can bring a change of shoes
Cool idea
mega cool idea
A tricky one to implement, although a genre and DJ timetable would be good.
Could be fun (especially to fast music )
Someone mentioned a Kebab stall...
Sure, but organisers could do something to help facilitate and encourage this. For example:
- Providing a list of coach hire companies (maybe with special rates)
- Asking people if they want to get in touch with others in their area for communal transport (even carsharing - it seems to work on a small scale on this forum)
Except that, well, they don't bother. If you're in one room, and the other is any distance away, you usually stay in that one room.
Oh yes, how could I forget.
I guess it may help attract the best dancers. Otherwise it may cause similar issues to master classes.
With master classes each person could potentially only do a fraction of one, which is a big downer if it removes a room which would have otherwise hosted open access classes.
I cannot comment on master classes, as I have not been to any, however, with private lessons - I do not doubt they can be great for those who attend the lesson, my point was, it does not effect the "masses".
It could attract the "best dancers" - but I would have thought, great music, friends going, choice of music types, good vibe, late night dancing, would attract the better dancers anyway.
When top WCS teachers come to Sydney, they do offer private lessons and these are very successful, however, I am sure the "best dancers" would have also attended without these private lessons - so they are a bolt on extra for the few, and do not necc make or break the weekend.
Private lessons are obviously not new - at the very first JA Southport I was teaching some workshops, and also helping out on the door (or was that hanging around near the door watching people work )... 2 beginner ladies brought along 2 gents who had never done MJ before - they were a bit put out that there was no "absolute beginner MJ" workshops to get thier partners started, after talking to Wes and getting approval, I taught a private lesson for the 4 of them.
So private lessons have been around since the start of JA weekenders, it just depends on how formal you make it.
Most teachers I know (me included), teach at weekenders for the fun of it, they get a great weekend for free and get paid a small amount as a thank you.
I would prefer not to do private lessons at these functions, as I am not worried about the money aspect. I value my spare time more.
A few teachers do weekenders for the money, and for these teachers, private lessons are thier "cash cows".
I've done privates at weekenders where there was a separate room and ones where there wasn't. In practice even if you have a room for privates there are usually several privates going on at the same time so it isn't really that different to going and finding a quiet corner somewhere.
6am bounce music please!
See you in Feb people x
