    Re: The price of food

Quite apart from my insensitive p1ss-taking , it reminds me of what a comfortable, insulated world I live in.
I was watching a programme about a girl born with 2 faces in India and the specialist doctor that was offering free help was saying that the biggest problem he faced was convincing the family that medical treatment was more likely to work than going to see the local priest (who, incidentally, refused to see them because they were from too low caste!).

Yet another example of behaviour that just seems incomprehensible for 'normal' people.

I heard something on the radio here last night about Tibet - and how they consult their religious people about everything. There is an authoress visiting Australia at the moment who is writing about Tibet (she's Tibetan) and she was interviewed about it.
Here's the link if you're interested..

Burying teenagers alive is apparantly a "custom" that should be defended against these nasty "liberal" ideals. see here :

"three girls, thought to be aged between 16 and 18, were kidnapped by a group of men from their Umrani tribe and murdered in Baba Kot, a remote village in Jafferabad district.

The women ... whose "crime" was that they wished to choose who to marry, [were shot, but] were still breathing as mud and stones were shovelled over their bodies, according to Human Rights Watch. "

said Israr Ullah Zehri : "These are centuries-old traditions, and I will continue to defend them,"

not much you can say to that logic but gape open mouthed in disgust

this reminds me of something i find quite amusing, the media always talks about many arab countries and their "conservative" ideas not being popular in the "liberal" west. News Flash: "the west", in the main, is not liberal - certainly the US and the UK are very right wing. What they should be saying is "conservative" and "extreme".
